Default Are you mean? (Mini-Rant)
I was at the dog park a few days ago when Doofus and I were met with two 10 or so year old girls and their mother. They came over and politely asked if they could pet him. He was in a high energy state but I didn't really feel like being rude and denying them so I calmly told him to play dead. He complied and stayed like that while they fussed over him and the mother and I chatted for a bit.

As they were about to leave though, I seen one of the girls get up and bump her foot on his snout as she was passing by. Doofus raises his head off of the ground and growls at her.

Not acceptable.

I look at him and my exact words were, "Excuse me! Put your head back down!" in my infamous uber bitch tone.

The mother then tells me it was just an accident, no need to yell at him. I told her I didn't yell, I raised my voice. And that growling is not allowed no matter what, also his head isn't supposed to be up in a play dead. Then I poked and prodded him with my foot. See? Like that.

She shakes her head and her exact words were, "People like you shouldn't own dogs."

So I guess I'm sorry I deal with a very intelligent, strong willed and even physically stronger dog the way it was supposed to be dealt with. I'm sorry that he isn't allowed to break commands and express his anger whenever a toddler bumps into him.

People like her DON'T own dogs. Especially this kind.

So, are you "mean"?

I'm a friggin' dictator in my house. We had some friends over on Saturday, and only one was not a dog person. I said, "okay - house rules. The dogs do NOT get people food - no sneaking them a piece of Bratwurst - no potato chips...nothing."

Our dog-owning friends said, "no problem." Our cat-owning friend said, "uh! you're so mean!"

After them being on a raw diet for several months, the last thing I'd need is for them to get a bunch of greasy food and then leave me with presents the rest of the night.

My family calls me the 'drill sergeant' when it comes to my dogs, if that says anything

hehe I would have gone nutts on my boy if he would growl at a person. I keep my dogs in line while outside my house....heck at 4 months old Lola knows how to heel and does so the entire walk, so I guess I am "mean" but when you have a dog that could pull you and drag you you need to be confidant you have it under control at all times in public. I do not have people over, I don't like people lol...well if a dog person lived close I would probably let them over and talk dogs, that is what I do with my GSD friend when I walk Lola with her crew.

I'm with you, Moose! I hate when people say "It's OK" after I have just told them to not give the dog any attention until she calms down. No, it isn't OK and yes, I guess people would call me a tyrant for insisting my dogs behave properly in public and at home.

I'll be most of these people have quite unruly dogs at home and think it's OK "cause they're cute"....

Yeah and then the dog ends up on craiglist or in the pound because the owners just couldnt figure out why thier dog acts the way it does

i dont think it was mean if a dog is in command it shouldnt be doing any thing people like that just dont know what it is like to own a hard headed breed dog you have to stay on the dog to keep it from turning in to a hard head.

I get this all the time with family. It really gets old but in the end, I'm looking out for what's best for my dog.

One time Java was just staring at my Aunt for a piece of her food and I corrected Java out of her stare to bring her back to reality. My aunt was like "Aww, but she's hungry." Yeah, right....Java is ALWAYS hungry. Little does my Aunt know, Java is training her and not the other way around.

Unfortunately these days a responsible pet owner == mean person that shouldn't own dogs. At least in the eyes of the general population most of which I wouldn't trust with a pet rock.

BTW, I am not mean, I'm a tyrannical asshole who expects my dog to behave. As long as she does I don't care what they think.

Aww, I feel even more at home now with my fellow "bitches"

I have been told I'm mean to my dog on many occasions. I run a tight ship

What breed is Doofus?
He's a black APBT.

I talked about all my problems with him in some other posts a while back and at one point I even thought I have to get rid of him. Now though, I have things in order and I can tell just how much happier he is for that.

I'm not just a bitch in public though, even at home. He has to do whatever trick I tell him to, treats or no treats, has to tolerate ANYTHING I do to him and he never eats without my say.

When we were getting past our little refusal stage I posted about, I made him roll over a total of 18 times in a row once.

But of course, respect goes both ways and I take my responsibility seriously by taking into account what he likes and doesn't like. I'll never do anything that hurts him just because I can.

I am actually a softie with my dog as long as she is behaving. I get to deal with it a lot too, she loves people and wants to go give everyone kisses. People are always telling me this or that behavior is okay even though I am telling her not to do it. I haven't had anyone call me mean yet, but I do tell them that it is not okay if I don't want her doing it.

I'll never do anything that hurts him just because I can.
Always a good sign. That is an aspect of a "responsible pet owner" that we rarely talk about as it should be a given. Unfortunately sometimes it is not. I underlined the key part of that IMO, if you know that you know more than a number of people I have met over the years.

Am I mean??? Yup! You betcha! I am the all powerful alpha bitch goddess to them, and I only favor well behaved dogs.I am NOT someone my dogs think about disobeying. They know better. I keep my 'bitch pack' ''in check'' with a stern tone of voice and fair and firm discipline.
They are NOT allowed to disobey my commands, and will be told so in no uncertain terms. I do have a 'generous' side,I am not all an ''evil bitch''.As any experianced ''bitch'' knows, kissing up,and pleasing the alpha bitch-does wonders.Do good for me and you are rewarded with much praise and affection, and occasional treats or privledges. Piss me off or do something deliberatly wrong,well..... Let's just say.... you will get ''owned'' by this bitch!!! lol.

I am a bitch then LOL...but at my house I am Queen Bitch and everyone knows it. I refuse to allow my dogs and that is ANY of them, from the 7 pound mini dachshund to the 70 pound pit bull mix, to break a command.

Yes I can be mean, example, I was waiting for my son to take a test at college so I walked over to the dog park to watch just what went on in there. I observed a dog, a pit bull, causing trouble everywhere he went. When the owner decided she was in over her head and that she better get out of there I asked her as she was leaving, What kind of dog is that? She said, its a pit bull, then I said well he didn't seem to get along with the dogs in there and then she said well he does get along with them he was just too excited and worked up. I said he really doesn't need to be in there with all those other dogs and she said well I bring him here to play with the other dogs lol I say yea but he wasn't playing he was starting fights with every dog he went up to. She made a noise and stormed off.
I could have been nicer but I was just in the mood to be mean.
