I think that if you weren't sure/capable of doing what is necessary, then you should take it to AC. But you know what's going to happen to him and you're able to prevent undue stress for the creature... I say you should take him to work.
|
My only hang up on just taking him to work and having it done is that I could be taking away any possible chance that he does have owners looking for him.
I'd hate to have one of my dogs lost (say Marsha, for example) and have someone just have her put down because she was aggressive to them when they found her--and I know she would be. Granted, if it were my dog there would be fliers up and ads in the paper and at the vet clinics and animal control, but still. |
Thats a rough choice. I would get him scanned for a microchip if you could before putting him to sleep. since you work at a vet I would do that before euthanasia.
id also get a picture of him and post it on craigslist and see if you get any responses I'd probably take him to the animal control myself. Just because it would take the responsibility off of my shoulders and I could breath a little easier knowing maybe just maybe his owners checked there or saw the craigslist ad and went there and hes back where he should be. |
Tough spot.... I'm not sure what I would do in a situation like that. I would like to think that I would try to find the owners, but you've been looking around and haven't found anyone that is owning up to that. It could be that this dog has been on it's own for a while, fending for itself for food every day. If that is the case, then it would be kinder to humanely euthanize the dog, instead of putting it through more undo stress by being at the shelter. I say, access the situation, the dog, and go with your gut on what is in the best interest of the dog. Chances are, the owners aren't looking for it and probably wouldn't come forward if they knew you had it. Sad really, the poor dog has so much going against it. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png

I don't think owners are coming for him... and if they were, well, there's not much left to carry home...
|
A picture would better illustrate his condition to us, but from the description you gave do you really think his owners give a damn about it considering?
Someone somewhere might be looking for him, but IF they are I suspect they aren't putting much effort into it. People suck. |
i would not euth a dog myself...someone could be looking for that dog...you never know. its not your choice to make. the shelters could know someone, the owner could be checking in...I would not do that.
|
He's already going through stress and fear as a stray in such poor condition. I don't think AC could do worse than being on the streets if your conscience really has a problem with taking him straight to work.
Have you called local vets and shelters and checked around for fliers and on CL for a lost dog posted in the last few weeks? If you've checked and there's nothing than I say euthanize as there probably aren't people looking for him and it would be a mercy. |
if you are going to make this your problem, then you have to use the solution what works for you.

Might be a good idea that you check out local laws before you take any action. CYA
