Default Cats vs. Dogs
I know almost everyone on this forum has the same views against BYB's and shelter dogs, how there are far too many. What about cats? Do you feel the same way about cat bybs? I believe there are a lot more cats then dogs without homes. Do you feel worse for dogs or cats? What are your views on this?

Yes but, there wouldn't be stray cats if people spayed and neutered them. It still comes back to the people.

I'm all for spaying and neutering cats and keeping them inside. My boys are fixed and strictly indoor and they couldn't care less. They're safe, healthy, not fighting with other cats, getting run down by cars, or making more babies.

I think BYB of ANY animal is wrong. That said, I think homeless cats fair better than homeless dogs. People living in rural areas tend to adopt feral cats to rodent control where they wouldn't adopt a dog.
At my parents farm we found a momma cat with 4 kittens while mowing the pasture. A few weeks later, the momma turned up in the barn with 3 of the kittens. We worked until we could catch them, then took them all into be altered.
A few months later one was hit by a car, but the 2 remaining kittens & momma cat still live in the barn and are quite happy. I think the "kittens" are 4 or 5 years old now.

I've only bought one purebred cat but it was a great experience and I got what I paid for. I see people selling purebred persians and siamese and the like for 150$ and I am sure that is the equivalent of BYB for cats.

Here's my ebony oriental shorthair, Kundalini at 3 months:

Cats suffer exactaly the same as dogs from overpopulation. When they are left to become feral they destroy the native wildlife because they are fare more effective hunters than dogs. They are more able to fend for themselves and this makes them quite a hazard. Couple this to the fact that few people contain their cats within their own property and they are a plague on the landscape. It would be great is everyone with their moggies would get them desexed to reduce the population. The trouble is some crossbreeds of purebreeds here may sell for $900 or more in some cases so there is definite incentive within the capitalist environment to breed them.

Both my cats are spayed and inside cats, loved, spoiled and happy. My neighbour has a massive quantity of ''outside'' cats... ok... feral cats really, that destroy all the neighours property, produce kitten non stop, have been found dead on the road smushed by cars, have almost been killed multiple times by my dogs and more than likely injured by them. Enough said. On of my neighbours periodically ''gathers them up'' and ''removes them''. Buddy doesn't even notice.

Yep, and the cats of BYBs can certainly suffer from it. My mother has one Ragdoll cat that she bought from a legitimate breeder. A few years ago, she went to check out a litter of "Ragdolls." When she got there, the cats obviously were not Ragdolls and did not have any papers. The "breeder" told my mom that the kittens were $500 but the mother was free, because she was washed up as a breeder (she was 5). So my mom left with the mother cat, because she felt bad for her. She weighed five pounds, and she's now a very skinny 9lbs. The vet said that she was probably only days from death at that weight. There was nothing wrong with her, aside from severe malnourishment.

She is definitely a pretty cat, even if the general consensus is that she's actually a bad quality Birman.

Sooo pretty!!

I agree... spay and neuter the cats/kittens is all I have to say. Both my cats came from awful situations. Luckily I got Viv young enough that she was just a little small and malnourished for her age and hadn't had a chance to get any diseases or anything. Spoiled rotten indoor beasts.

I've fostered cats before. I probably found home for over 20 cats when I got stuck with one that was so shy. We ended up keeping her and then my husband said I couldn't foster anymore.

I have done a few TNR's since I stopped fostering.

All my cats (4) are indoor only and spayed and neutered. I've also been rescuing and fostering unwanted kittens and finding them good homes for the past 15 years. It is tragic.

I feel the same. There will never be enough homes for them sadly because of BYBs. You can't possibly save them all, either. It is just not possible.

Hundreds of healthy dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens are put down every single day. It's sad and a reality.

I do think that cats are harder to find homes for than dogs because not everyone wants a cat and they look the same but their personalites are different.

The shelter I work at is low-kill but we only take in what we can but we have to take every single dog and cat in from animal control and that can add up.

We aren't overflowed with cats like some shelters and we're lucky for that. So I feel bad for dogs and cats that do not have a home especially working at a shelter we wonder why nobody has adopted these animals.

We try our best to find them homes, but it will never happen for some sadly. We may think they are unique and special because we work with them every single day but other people may not find them unique and special. Some people want a specific color of a cat or kitten...

we are asked for orange kittens every year and we rarely get in litters. Or they want a kitten with blue eyes because it's what their kid wants. There is nothing wrong with wanting a specific color, but you have to love the whole personality as well.

So many want puppies too and again we don't get in litters often either. When we do get puppies they come in one at a time and sometimes their littermates come in at a later time. We usually get in dogs that are 6 months or 9 months old and then people think that is too old.

With that said; I have 3 cats that are indoor only, they are up to date on their vaccines my males are neutered and my female is spayed. They get the best care just like my dogs do. For whoever said cats are independent are full of crap. My 3 are the most needy cats you will ever meet. They might as well be dogs.

Sorry for the long post.
