One More Mind Changed...
So today I decided to take my car up to the local tire place to see exactly why my tires were making SO MUCH noise. While waiting for them to take a look at my car and tell me what is wrong with it, I went and sat in the waiting area. A woman walked into the waiting area, and sat about 2 chairs away from me. We made small chit-chat about local news stories (NASA not getting anymore funding, etc), and she asked about my shirt.
I was, of course, wearing my "Pit Bull Mom" shirt. I told her that I owned an American Pit Bull Terrier, and she made the "OH NO!" face. She explained how her son had owned a "pit bull" that had "suddenly turned on him" and had to be PTS. Turns out her son's "pit bull" was a 95lb "rednose", obviously a product of a BYB. I decided to take the opportunity to explain to her about how there are different breeds that are called "pit bulls", and about how the genetics of the dog plays a role in how they will turn out, regardless of "how you raise them". The more we talked, the more enthusiastic she became about learning the truth behind the media lies! We chatted for about 20 minutes about the true APBT, and she had many questions about aspects of the breed, including dog fighting, that I answered truthfully, but carefully. She started talking about how her husband and her had been discussing getting a dog for their empty home; their daughter had moved out a few years ago, and just had their first grandchild with her husband. When they called her name when her car was done, she asked if I had a card so that she could discuss things further with me. Well, tonight the woman called me, asking about a local bully breed rescue, and was inquiring about training. She's thinking about adopting one of the senior, special needs dogs they have! Just to think, an hour of honest conversation, and this woman's lifelong view of the "pit bull" type dogs has been forever changed! **Just a side note, my car's struts are bad and chopped up my tires, so I need new struts and tires... ugh!** |
That is great to hear! One person at a time is all that matters. Maybe with some more education she will be able to change someone else's mind for the better.
Oh, that sucks about your car... they are money pits in my opinion http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif |
Congrats! Good job!!! http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/s...eerleader3.gif

glad to hear that there are some open minded people out there that are willing to listen to the truth

That is awesome.

If you are like me, your tires make so much noise because you mash the gas too much. Thats also the cause of the foul smelling smoke often associated with said noise!

I rather buy tires then a new engine. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png It is awesome what random places you get to talk about your love of apbts.

That's great. It is one thing to change someone's mind about the breed by giving them the "They're the best dogs in the world!!" talk...it is an entirely different thing to tell the TRUTH about the breed and let people make up their own minds on whether or not that sounds like the right dog for them. Way to go!

That's awesome! One more mind changed and one more dog saved! Now that woman may pay it forward and change someone else's attitude.

Great job!! That's awesome that she's considering adopting an older dog from a shelter! It would be cool if she would join here. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/redface.png
Sorry to hear about your car though... I hate car/mechanical problems. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/yuck.gif |
Aw that's great! I'm glad she wants to adopt an old needy dog. It'll probably help her transition into the bully world, since older dogs are usually less exuberant and sometimes already have some training.
