This past weekend we took our 4 year old pit and our 16 week old pit to my boyfriend's parents house to run around their yard. They have 2 female dogs that Diesel, our 4 year old, has lived with since he was 6 months old and have always gotten along with. We recently moved out so they haven't been around each other as much, but they all did go hiking together a couple weeks ago with no problems. One of their dogs, Ginger had a hurt leg so she was put in the front room behind a baby gate. Diesel and Colt, out 16 week old, came in and the dogs all greeted each other and they went in the yard to play. All except for Ginger. Everything was great outside; they ran and played like always. We brought them in and Diesel went up to the baby gate and sniffed. Now that I think about you could tell he was changing even then. He started growling and before we could make it to him and grab him the baby gate fell and all hell broke loose. I grabbed Colt up as quick as I could because if one of the dogs got a hold of him he would be done for. Diesel and Ginger were going at it and their other dog, Noodle, jumped in and Diesel grabbed her ear and would not let go. We keep dog mace handy in case something like that happens so I grabbed the mace, but before we had a chance to use it Noodle's ear got ripped in half and Diesel released it.
That just goes to show everyone that it DOES NOT MATTER!!! It doesn't matter how long the dogs have known each other or how long they have gotten along. None of that matters. Always expect pitbulls or any bully breed to fight. My boyfriend just can't believe that our precious Diesel would ever do anything like that, but I have explained to him that it is in his nature. True, breed does mean destiny, but when it comes to other dogs pitbulls are very unpredictable. Everyone please just watch your dogs closely and always expect a fight when meeting another dog. Always be prepared! |

Sorry about the dogs ear but things could have been Much worse & I'm glad it broke up quickly.
And you are 100% correct- they Will fight, even if they are raised together from pups, or have lived together for Years. Sounds like you did a good job explaining DA to your bf & hopefully he won't hold this against Diesel. I always tell people that expecting a Bully not 2 fight, is the same as expecting a Lab not 2 retrieve. For people that don't understand DA is a trait, that seems to help them "get it." Also, I would def. get a Breakstick. I believe that there are a few members here that sell them. Mace may not work. It didn't work on my dog, but he was already deep in a fight & my ex sprayed the whole can in his face, eyes & mouth - It did not slow him down a bit. In fact- he fought harder. |

Any dog will fight any dog, especially in the absence of their "pack leaders" and being in separate "packs". It does play quite a role. Also, the fact that the other dog was injured may have sent an incorrectly read body signal that set him off. You never can quite be sure, that is why you can never 100% trust a dog. That is why MJ is crated when I leave. As much as she seems to love my cat, I will not trust a dog (especially one with such prey drive) around another animal that she can hurt. It would be irresponsible of me to allow the situation to be presented.

I am very sorry this happened This is precisely why owners should memorize RULE #1:
Never trust your pitbull or MIX not to fight. No one likes to think that there sweet dog would harm another animal. But this breed can and will at the drop of a hat. I mean no disrepect toward handlers, trainers, but I do know this breed. Some dogs are handled very expertly but we are not all experts. Why do we take chances? Some are cold, some are hot. They can turn on at different ages. They do not have to be a pedigreed dog in order to be DA. Some people are blessed to have very obedient dogs, and others are not so lucky. You did as well as you could have and I certainly don't slam you for anything, but please get a breakstick and learn to use it. Next time might be alot worse. |

Did you get the ear stitched? I have one that had her ear torn into 3 ribbons and we were able to save most of it with little scarring. She just lost part of the bottom edge. I thought the whole thing(ear) was a goner.
She was in a boarding kennel and the dog in the next run grabbed her and stripped the ear. The bleeding was horrific. |

One of the golden rules with having this breed is "always expect a bulldog to fight". Never think that they won't ever fight, no matter how friendly they are. Do you own a break stick? If not, I'd be ordering one today. You can get one from www.pbrc.net They have really nice ones, I got 2 for $30.
Here's a very helpful sticky that everyone needs to read from time to time: http://www.pitbull-chat.com/showthread.php?t=13984 |
