Default RUN! Pit Bull on the loose!!!
Last week my kids told me how they were rushed into class during recess. A school official came over the PA and told the children to return to their classes at once, there was a Pit Bull on the school grounds. One of the teachers was absolutely panicked and was screaming at the children to run.

My 11 year daughter and a friend went over to the teacher, and the friend informed the teacher that they both owned Pit Bulls and that they were sweet dogs that were not likely to hurt people. The teacher’s response in disgust was, “YOU HAVE ONE OF THOSE ATTACK DOGS!!! THEY ARE GOING TO EAT YOUR FACE OFF!!!" My daughter did not make any comment, but she said she wanted to.

I can understand having a school policy to return children to class if any dog shows up on school grounds without a master, but this seemed over the top because of the breed.

After a little thought, my daughter and I came up with an appropriate way to respond to her aggravation with the panicked teacher; she/we are going to write a paper on the Pit Bull breed and include the actual stats on attacks compared to other breeds. She is going to turn it in to the "EAT YOUR FACE OFF" teacher and also to her own teacher.

I told her it's easier to think of those teachers and panicked students as stupid and just write them off, but the right, and harder, thing to do was to at least try to educate them. I'm hoping the teacher respects her effort and reads the paper. I will keep you all informed on the reaction we get.

What a despicable thing to say to a kid. That's a good idea on the paper, just hope the teacher reads it with an open mind. Lots of people can be presented with the facts but will choose to follow the crowd, or the oh-so-wise words of the media.

When I was in elementary school there was a loose dog on the property (looked to be a shepherd mix thing). Anyway, we were on lock-down until it went away.....
And the worst part of your story is the other 100 kids that heard the teacher scream that are going to go run to their parents and tell them about 'the vicious pit bull that attacked their school'.
Disgusted. Protect the children, but don't be spewing lies to a bunch of impressionable minds.

I would be SO mad if she told such things to my kid and I would have a serious conversation about it with the woman!

Ah yes...let's RUN when there is a dog that is loose on the grounds. That's a brilliant idea. It doesn't matter what breed of dog it is. That's the worst possible thing you could tell someone (especially kids) to do.

Yea the paper is a great Idea I would also give a copy to the principle of the school.
My first response would be to smack the teacher but then My daughter would remind me that we cant do that

I think if they had told my kids that in school, they would have had me up there the next day.... however, your actions might be better.

What would be nice is, if you could get the school to let you bring your dog to school and do an assembly in the gym, and use it as a chance to teach the kids, as well as the adults, that this breed is one of the most misunderstood breeds there is. It would also be a chance to teach kids that these dogs are not for the "thug wanna be's" and kids that want to look Billy Bad Boy. You could even do a question answer session with the kids and let them ask questions about the breed, and have a chance to pet the dogs. It would be a wonderful way to educate the kids about what these dogs are, and what they are not.... if the school would let you.

What a wonderful lesson for your Daughter on the effective way to promote the breed and educate other human beings! I commend you both, the world needs you. Forrester

I would go even farther than that to educate. Do they have show and tell at your child's school?

How about bringing a nice friendly pit to class for show and tell and talking about the breed while setting the record straight?

That is an AMAZING idea! The trick is, getting them to let the dog come in the school, and wouldn't the parents of the other kids in school have to sign some sort of permission slip to let their kids participate in something like that? I've never had kids, and from what I remember of being in school we had to have permission slips to even SNEEZE. And if the teacher acted that way, there's no telling how the parents would react to hearing that someone wants to bring a "face eating" dog to their school..

I'm not thrilled with some of the comments I get in the park about how could I have a Pit Bull around my kids. I have to admit, most comments have been positive about my dogs; it's that one out of 20 stupid comment I get that kills me.

I'm sure the two papers will be passed around for comment in the teachers lounge. I hope they are at least impressed with the effort to educate the misinformed. That's why I think it's important that it comes from my daughter, and not from a phone call from me. We will see...

Just have your kid write a story about your dog, no need to compare bite "statistics" IMHO it just adds to the mantra "oh look one of those pit nutters defending their monster".

In this day and age it would be very hard to get them to allow you to bring the dog into the School because some many people are scared of lawsuits and some have the mentality that the Pitbull will attack and kill everyone all it takes is one person thinking this way and your dog will not be allowed

Yep!

My 4 month old girl is prone to sneak attack any one who puts their face close to her's! She has the fastest tong is the west. I have never had such a well behaved and friendly dog in my life. She doesn't show any fear and she is so sweet. She goes to the school everyday in my wife's van and the kids love her.

I think all we can do is to give the general public good examples of Pits and calmly explain and educate people with the wrong view of the breed.

Some will never change their minds ( my mother for one) no matter what you do or say, so focus on the ones you can.

Its unfortunate that it happened to be a pit bull, on the other hand not all dogs are kid friendly and I would've wanted my kid to be brought inside just in case. I just wish they couldn't left the "eat your face off" comment out
