Default Ideas for adoption days?
Does anyone have any experience or have suggestions about how to hold an adoption day for a local shelter? There are a bunch of dogs that are in foster homes, and I think they naturally get looked over since people go to the shelter and forget about the dogs that aren't there. I probably wouldn't have my dog right now if he didn't happen to be at the shelter that day- he knew exactly how to be cute and convince me to take him home.

So has anyone attended a function that was really successful? The weather here might be a bit on the cold side for an outdoor event, but maybe in a few months.

Thanks!
Mike

I wouldn't worry to much about dogs that are in foster homes as they safe and generally at no risk of being put down whereas the dogs at the shelter might well be. If somebody looks at the dogs at the shelter and doesn't see anything they like then send them to an appropriate foster home to have a look at a dog that you think suits.

Elizabeth-

Nothing has been picked out yet- I'm just looking for suggestions from people about events that they attended that they thought were successful. I'd like to help organize something, but I'm not exactly sure what. For example, I know PetSmart does adoption days, but I don't know if that's the best venue.

Jim-
None of the dogs are in danger of being put down there, so it's not a big concern. If a dog with a foster home is adopted, it will generally make room for another dog, so either way it's a win! I wouldn't want to necessarily exclude any of the dogs that don't have foster homes, but my main motivation was thinking about how I think those dogs in particular get passed over more than they should.

Thanks!

Get a BBQ on the go. You make a little money which always comes in handy and fosters can meet each other and potential adopters can meet the dogs.

When we went to Pit Bull Awareness Day back in October, they had a raffle for a really nice wood burning thing that someone had donated with a beautiful picture of an APBT burned into it. They had a moon bounce for the kids, face painting, a Mexican restaurant came and sold nachos (I don't know if they gave any of the profit to the cause or not, but it attracted folks). They also had a "pit out the pit bull" table with all the breeds that look like, but aren't APBT. They got one of the local TV stations to come out and do a short story on the event, and they filmed a lot of footage (Bella even ended up on TV...from a distance ). They had all the fact sheets, and web sites to visit, like www.badrap.org, and of course, you'd have to have a link to pitbull-chat.

I volunteer for a rescue organization & we often do adoptions out in public. What we usually do is call a local store such as our local Tractor Supply or Food City, we usually do it at Tractor Supply, & get permission to set up our adoption on the premises. We then get all of the dogs that are in foster care & bring them all to the location, we have crates that we put the dogs in, we also have puppy packs that go home with each dog/puppy & they get a spay/neuter voucher for $25 if the dog is not spayed/neutered.
If we do not have many dogs in foster care at that time, we will go to the local shelter & bring some dogs from the shelter to our adoptions too & if they do not get adopted then they go into foster care not back to the shelter. IF you have any more questions about what we do, PM me & let me know.

Definitely talk to your local pet and feed stores, especially your favorites.

My fav pet store does lots of adoption days for the local pit bull rescue, and they've been very successful. One of the pups they had got adopted by one of the employees, she's one lucky dog.
