While reading threads and looking at pictures, I see a lot of different names for the dogs, and dont kill me, but I can't tell the diffrence. Can anyone dumb it down for me, lol. And I've read the forums about the different kinds, but that's really just a history. What's the difference and how can you tell?? Thanks in advance

Thanks. Some are short and stocky, while others are tall and lean. I was mistaken and thought pitbulls were pitbulls were pitbulls were pitbulls....and so on. I had no idea there were different breeds until I came to this forum. Amazing what you can find out. But I did know about American staffordshire terrier, which I thought was the "term" for pitbull. Lol. What an airhead huh?!!

It's okay.
The media and Joe Schmoe has thrown all those dogs into one big "Pit bull" category. Though to purist, the only "pit bull" is the American Pit Bull Terrier. They are all bully breeds, but in the true meaning, they aren't really all pit bulls. Now if BSL came a knock, yes, they would all be considered "pit bulls" by the govt. and anyone coming to take your dog. Though, about 20+ breeds fall into that category as well, if BSL comes to town. |

I don't have the papers on my boy, but by looking at the pictures, Im thinking he may be an American Pitbull Terrier or an American Staffordshire Terrier. They are all beautiful dogs and it's sad they are all called by the same name. I'm glad there ARE educated people out here who know the difference and can pass it along to "airheads" like me!! Lol

Here is another good site that shows bully breeds. The ambully is not honestly recognized as a breed yet. The big difference, as you can see is that the ambully has a bigger head, wider body and shorter legs. American Staffordshire Terrier Scroll down to the bottom to see other breeds. A weird thing I encounter is that some sites claim an american stratfordshire terrier is bigger than apbt but this site does not claim that.
And we want pictures!!!! |

See thats where I'm confused at. I see so many different types of dogs and they are called "bullies" on alot of forums. But when I go to the dog shows, or Bully Shows, or look up American Bullies, it looks NOTHING like what most on this forum considers to be a bully. So I'm guessing a bully is anything of that breed family thats not a definite APBT, or BT...B/c I've seen some dogs that are tall like staffs at about 21-24in, but heads arent overly big like a "american bully", body proportionate, very muscular and weigh anywhere from 75-100 or more pounds and they aren't fat looking at all. Whereas as most "american bullies" I've seen on vids, shows, etc look like short wide fat or sometimes muscular dogs with either very big rounder heads with a smaller/shorter face/nose etc or the look of a Staff or Bully head like the "american bully" pic above.

The ABKC,the registry developed for the bully, accepts three different types of bully.Classic, pocket and XL bully.
American Bully Kennel Club - 2008 There are too many standards for bullies, different breeds being mixed in and different goals from different breeders to be able to have a definite look. |

I don't think its a definitive science. Because the bulk of them are registered with whatever kennel club or breed association as apbt, its very difficult to say they are anything else. They also aren't exact as to their phenotype but rather occupy a range of appearances along a continuum. There is no defining line in the sand to say one is this or that. I also hate the terms american bully or american staffy because it confuses everyone. Maybe some of the dogs you have seen texan are American bulldogs. Its all such a mess that it is a lot easier to just consider them all pitbulls. Who really gives a damn?

body proportionate, very muscular and weigh anywhere from 75-100 or more pounds and they aren't fat looking at all. XXL Bullies tend to be 100-120+ range, at least from what I have seen. From what I can tell most XXL Bully breeders got by the manta "Bigger is better". |

Ok, so I looked up some vids to see if I could find examples. In this clip of all of the dogs working, some are apbt no doubt, but other would be considered bullies b/c of height and weight/size, yet they look just like the apbt just bigger.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPPsUQlQ9KE"]YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.[/ame] Same goes for this dog(which I think is beautiful by the way) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHjpBIelUjQ"]YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.[/ame] Same for the second dog in this vid starting at about 1:36, but the other two are smaller so they would fit characteristics for apbt [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyA1JnqOy44&feature=related"]YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.[/ame] And this one, yet they dont have the wide, huge head, compact look of american bullies [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-V7gVU7Z6Y"]YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTiS4E2ag9A&NR=1&feature=fvwp"]YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.[/ame] Now this lady is placing in shows with her dogs, and they are sitting in 60lb class when lean and fit, which means normally they weigh more, again putting them in bully range http://www.caragankennel.com/ourdogs.html And this is what I'm use to seeing considered American bullies when I go to the shows, actually this one is more muscular than most... http://www.youtube.com/user/southern...l?blend=3&ob=4 But like the pics above. alot of bullies I see look like pigs with a overly sized pitbull head, or a english bulldog with more of a staffs face.... I think it sucks that they are all put in one big "pitbull" family b/c it messes up the breed IMO [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPPsUQlQ9KE"][/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHjpBIelUjQ"][/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-V7gVU7Z6Y"][/ame] ---------- Post added at 03:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:05 PM ---------- XXL Bullies tend to be 100-120+ range, at least from what I have seen. It's not as easy as breed z is this height x weight.
Pocket bullies are on the small side, though they are still bullies. Some APBT's are bred on the large side,65+ pounds. AST's are usually a little bigger than the average APBT which is 30-60 pounds. This thread shows the difference from breeding for a working type APBT(ADBA),compared to the show type(UKC),and the AST(AKC). Visual comparison of top winning UKC, AKC and ADBA dogs - Today's APBT |
