Default veiws on pits and dogs that look like pits
When living in a Pitbull/bully breed friendly community you sometimes forget how bizarre people can get when they see a big bad bully dog. When we walk Lexi here in the city she has a fan club and meets new people every day This is quite enjoyable and is what my fiance' Fred is used to when it is time for the "w'" word.SO when we took Lexi for a walk at a park a few miles away from the city he got to see what it is like outside of a bully friendly community and he was so shocked, It was hard to say whether I was more annoyed with people or amused that day. In any case even though our big bad pitbullw as perfectly well behaved and wagging her butt the whole way, we had people veering out of our path, one woman in particular was walking with her little girl who was on one of those kiddie bikes( the ones that are maybe a foot and a half high and made of plastic) actually saw her daughter heading straigh for Miss Lexi and grabbed the kid bike and all and quickly went the other way ( even though at that point Lexi was licking a big 100+ lb lab's face and getting petted by the Lab's owner) I almost laughed at that one,Fred however was so shocked since he had never seen how people really acted with Pit bulls. The whole walk was like that people veering out of our way acting like this little 30 lb puppy is going to eat them. On the plus side we did have the whole side of the path to ourselves which was quite nice.

ON the bright side when I walk her I still am taking great pleasure with people who see Miss lexi and say "oh what a beautiful dog" and my answer is always "why thank you, would you like to pet her?" ANd I just LOVE how people's faces light up when they realize she is pettable One case in particular was a little girl of about 7 walking along with either a baby sitter or big sister who stopped and whispered quite audibly to her escort"oh look at that cute doggy!" When I asked if she would Like to pet her I got the most enthusiastic "YES" on the planet, and she rushed forward and hugged Lexi who of course soaked up the attention like the sponge she is and washed the girl's face.

Fred was so shocked by the difference of people that he decided that we are going to turn her into a service dog( which I would actually benefit from anyways) as well as a therapy dog and then we are going to take her everywhere and show people what pits REALLY are.

It gets weird how differently people can veiw a dog in just a few mile radius. I will be kinda sad to leave such a pit friendly community behind, but then again I just have to look up at my ceiling and see the stains from when the toilet in the apartment above us overflowed and we had human waste raining down in our living room bathroom and bed room or just smell the pot and inscence fumes from the neighbor kids and then I remember why I am more than eagar to leave this place behind!

That place your at sounds like paradise.. NOT!

I find it pretty offensive. I know I shouldnt and i should have a tougher skin, but when people sneer at me from across the street when Im walking my dogs, it takes everything i have not to give them the finger or ask them wtf their problem is. BOTH my dogs are behaved and walk great on their leashes, they never except one time gone near another dog and that one time the dogs was retarded. Ive had them charge at my dogs, bark uncontrollably at my dogs, basically freak out on my dogs, while my dogs acted like the perfect pups they are, Yet IM the one who gets dirty looks.

Man oh man, dont get me started. Grrrrr!!!

I know right? it is sooo ridiculous I had a Pom lunge at Lexi while she was SITTING at my feet and I got such a dirty look because of what my dog is. I have had the urge to give people like that the finger too but I have been a cripple for almost 4 years now and because of my age people always gave me weird looks(until I got my tattoo ,anyways but that's another story) , so I guess part of me is used to human stupidity.

I also get weird looks because I walk Lexi with her collar and leash and her seat belt harness on and why do I do that? Because if for some reason she freaked out I would rather grab hold of a harness around her middle and be able to lift her up if I have to than end up with her getting hurt. but i guess it makes her look like she is ultra vicious *eye rolls*

I'm sorry to hear you even had to deal with that, I wish nobody would ever have to. BUT on the bright side, every positive comment and new friends will be worth so much more.

That is such a bummer! I am having a hard time with that too. I have not expierenced it in public yet but I know I will and I am not looking forward to it. Every time I have had my boy out he has had nothing but great responses. However, my fiance had him at a store the other day and an older woman made some negative comments about them on her way out the door. It made me so mad and I wasn't even there.

it gets sad when people act like that, BUT remember,YOU know how wonderful your dog is and the breed in general and so does everyone else on this forum! try to keep that in mind next time some vexing person repeats a news propaganda.

its that simple, you KNOW you are right and they are wrong so you are mentally superior to all the nay-sayers!

Yes, I will do my best! HAHA I am pretty good about either keeping my mouth shut or speaking intelligently to prove a point. I would much rather make them feel stupid for being rude then just flippling them off

I find it curious that people who have never had a pitbull all of a sudden know everything about pitbulls and why I shouldn't have one. To me, Kally looks like a total pitbull, but to others she doesn't. So she isn't so formidable at first glance. I love it when I tell others she's a bullie after they have petted her and found her irresistible. Then, those who have had preconceptions about pitbulls have to bite their tongues. Even when Kally was a puppy, she met an infant visiting in my home. I held her leash while she explored the baby with such gentleness. More gentleness than the humans in fact.

Our Dog Snow is a AB but people always run from her and say is that Pit bull going to bite me ? I feel your pain Snow (who is deaf) adores kids and adults and wants to love everyone. We want to eventually have another Bully. To my husband and I no dog is better than a bully, pit, terrier, Ab, or otherwise .
I used to feel scared just like everyone else i was a very uninformed person , until my husband who had a pit before wanted a bulldog . Now i am a bully lover i want no other dog. I wish people would give them a chance and get to know them . good Luck on your move and I hope you find some bully friends in your new home. Aimi billy And our owner Snow
