Default getting my pup fixed
hey guys. i have a male blue apbt who is just over 4 months old, and i am wondering when is a good time to get him fixed. i have heard that in some breeds if u do it to early it will stunt there growth. he is like i said just over 4 months and around 30 lbs or so. the pics i have posted with this are of when he was 3 months. his ears are not set all the way in these pics, but tey have set perfect now.

It really depends on you.

Do you think you can be responsible enough to keep him from getting to any females in heat and avoid "Oops" litters? If so, I'd say wait till he is full developed. If you don't think you can keep him properly contained and can't avoid "Oops" litters, then get him neutered ASAP.

Here is a good thread to help you out.

thanks. the thread kinda confused me lol. but most i have read said to wait till atlease it is over 1 year old. i want to get it done just for the fact i want to get a female apbt later on down the road and i dont want those 'woops' litters to come about lol.

I'd wait until he's a year old then. If you plan on getting a female sooner than that, then get him neutered right before that.

I prefer to wait between 9-12 months for those that want it done but are resonsible enough to keep their dog out of trouble.

You can even go longer that that if necessary (if, say, you would be getting a female when he's about 1 1/2 yrs old.)

One thing to remember is that a dog can still impregnate a female for up to 2 weeks after a neuter due to residual semen already in the tubes. So if you know you are getting another dog, in like 3 months, then have him done as early as possible.

i will NEVER get any of my dogs fixed..nor male, nor females..I will have to pay attention when females are in heat in order to prevent litters..

my neighbour had a nice, lean black with white chest apbt .. he got it fixed..that dog got so fat now...anyways this is just me..

My male was fixed when I got him. He was around 4-5 months at the time. Hes now right at 50lbs. I dont think his growth was stunted.

And Im the complete opposite. Unless I had a papered pure breed dog that I wanted to mate (which I would never do) , I wouldnt have an intact male or female. Intact males are far more aggressive unless you breed them on a regular basis not to mention that fact that a big part of dog bite attacks are carried out by in tact males. Intact females contribute to the over population of unsound dogs due to careless breeding and owners.

I say..

OFF WITH THEIR NUTS!

I'd say, you can safely have him neutered between 9-12 months of age. My vet wouldn't neuter before 9 months.

Oh, and t0r.... you are taking a HUGE risk with either ending up with a pregnant female, or having your male get a female pregnant. It's too big of a risk in my opinion. If you don't want your dog to gain weight, exercise him and don't over feed. It won't stunt his growth. I had Titus neutered at 15 months, and he is a normal size Lab, and he is not overweight.

I completely support and promote spay/neuter of animals. If you aren't showing them, and don't have breed worthy animals, you should always spay/neuter.

about it reducing aggresiveness? might be true but I don't want a potatoe sack sitting in the couch.

Do you have papers on all your dogs? Are they registered? Are you licensed to breed your dogs? How can you ensure your dog will NEVER get out? Do you stay with them every minute they are outside? Have your dog ever produced an unwanted litter?

Just seems sorta foolish to me not to neuter.

And whats wrong with a couch potato? Id rather have a couch potato then have an intact male get lose and terrorize the neighborhood further jeopardizing the breed entirely.

I agree with Alma. My Redman is still the leader of our pack. And a unfixed female , gross.

t0r, could you please pass on your knowledge to my dog, Ruger? Apparently no one told him that since he was neutered at 7 months he is supposed to be fat and a couch potato...

Rambo's Dad - having an intact animal is a huge responsibility that some people underestimate. Male dogs are doing to do WHATEVER it takes to get at a female in heat, and don't think they don't know about that female 10 blocks away! If you honestly think you can handle it, wait until he is mature. If you have even the slightest doubt, I would get it done sooner than later. The effects of a neuter on a younger dog are not worth the risk of an oops litter, if you ask me.

yeah i think that is what i am gunna do when he gets a little older. and just for the fact that you have a pit bull tor is enough of a reason for people not to mess with your stuff. your dog doesnt have to be aggresive to guard your stuff. i just never wanna risk those oops litters, and him being the slightest aggresive. and he is show quality( i want to get him into weight pulling will him being nuetured have any bad effects towards him pullng wieghts when he gets older?) and he has papers on him.

I'm waiting as long as I can. When one dog is in heat they are both closely watched. outside times are more than supervised they're rotated. mars is crated, locked, then locked inside a room. when noone is home. They are not to be in a room alone together at any time.

a&p says I should wait till mars is fully grown. though he doesn't need his testes he does need the hormones they produce to grow the best he can.

Rambo, I don't know the rules on Weight pull, but if you want to show him, then he has to stay intact.

Hopefully one of our seasoned WP people can tell you if they need to be intact for that.

Also, I believe he is too young to start doing an exercise like pulling you on your roller blades.
