With APBT's this is real serious issue. I speak from experience as I did have a dog stolen at one point. (I luckily got her back after only a day). The thieves in question had seen me walking/playing with her in the front yard, and returned in the middle of the day when they knew nobody was at home. Broke into the house (leaving fingerprints), and took her (and only her) out of her crate. It was obvious they only wanted her as they left the TV's, even jewelry that was left on the counter was still there.

It ended up with those who did this locked up for a year on felony home invasion.

WE must remember...the "element" that would love to have our dogs (because of look) are the same type that will actually do this kind of thing.....ie... a stock broker will not steal your dog, but the drug-dealing gang-banger down the street will, and HE is the one that really wants a tough looking pit.

Best advice.... try to limit those who see your dog at or near your home, and get an alarm system. Also beware of "friends" of friends as this can be a real issue also.

p.s. - I have even heard of people who had a litter of pups, and while showing them to prospective owners, they have had someone break in later and steal the whole litter (and parents!!!). {rather obvious a perspective new owner did this}

Im shocked about these stories being that its a pitbull but then again it what i've been reading that pitbulls are not guard dogs. I know my brother shows off our blue nose pitbull and tells anyone who ask about the pit and its parents. There is some very good advice in here that'll i'll be taking.

Otis & Domino's sister, Princess, was stolen from inside of her home - inside of her crate. She was 5 months old and has not been seen since despite diligent searching for her by literally 1000s of people across the country. It happens far more often than you want to think about. Here, when we are not @ home, our dogs are all inside in their crates, inside of the house, AND we have burglar bars on all windows and doors.

Default How to avoid dog theft?
I'm planning to get an apbt puppy and I'm a bit paranoid about dog thieves. I have two medium sized mixed breed dogs that use the dog door to roam inside the house and in the fenced backyard. When I get the pit puppy I plan to crate it in the house when I'm not home.

Does this seem sufficient to prevent the puppy from being stolen? I'm curious how often dog thieves break into houses, or do they mainly just go after dogs that are tethered or kept in a fenced yard.

Definitely don't let the new pup in the yard unsupervised - they can dig, climb, and jump their way out. I dont know how common it is for someone to break in the house to go after your dog - I think more commonly they get stolen from the yard or if the dog escapes.

You need to watch the dog likes its a 500k diamond. LOL.

Generally speaking dog thieves don't break into houses (Unless your dog was worth there time), they usually go for dogs tied, or in the yard. Left in unlocked cars, Tied in front of stores etc. Its not just APBTs to be worried about its ALL breeds mutt or not.

My grandma adopted out a Lab/Springer/Chesapeake puppy out to one of my ma's friends...That dog was his life for the short time he had her, he left his window down on his truck when the dog was around 12wks old, he ran into a gas station came back out the dog was GONE, he searched high and low, posted flyers. The dog never showed. This dog was not known to roam, or run away she was the kind of puppy who if jumped out of the truck she would have run to the gas station door and waited for her owner to return...Unfortunetly the area was a bad area known for people wanting breeding and bait dogs, so we can only hope the best. The dog looked simlar to a Sable APBT puppy but someone who knows apbts would be able to tell thats not what she was.

Anyways that being said, you always have to put your dogs safety first, think of them as a child. Would you leave you 4month old baby in an unlocked car while you just went into a store? People do it, but other people also learn there lesson when there car or child is kidnapped.

Generally they go after dogs out in a yard sometimes under the cover of darkness sometimes in broad daylight. Since you have said that the dog will be crated when you are not home i would say thats a good start, and I wouldnt worry about anyone breaking into your house for your dog. Dont advertise what you have by showing everyone on your street most poeple dont care but most people are not trustworthy either, and might have ties to someone that will steal your beloved pet. There is no need to be paranoid just be smart about what you do. Might I also suggest the purchase of a shotgun? Even if you didnt have the puppy its a good thing to have around the house for self defense you never know whats gonna happen its good to be prepared.

My feeling exactly. That part is well taken care of, just worried about when I'm not home.

Good advice above.

Another thing, a little off topic, make sure your APBT and two mixed bred dogs aren't left alone unsupervised together. (I noticed you said they just walk in and out freely, don't let the APBT do this)

That's my plan. The pit will always be crated when not supervised by someone capable of controlling her.

if someone wants your dog, they'll most likely get it. Very few people in the breed ever visited my house and it was intentional as most people in this breed are junk, its the truth, in gamedogs anyway.

I had my foundation male stolen 5mo ago and I doubt I'll ever see him again. First dog ever stolen in about 15yrs or so with these dogs.

here he is as a youngster, these were better days, not many bred on earth like him either

That sucks. Was he inside or outside when they got him?

I think keeping him crated when you are gone is a great idea. Don't even let him go outside alone without you being with him when you are home. If you can't be with him, crate him... that will keep him safe. I'd also check into micro-chipping him if you can too. Be sure to post pictures of him as soon as you get him... or her??? lol

It'll be a her. Probably won't be until next summer though. I've picked out a breeder and dam that I like, but she won't be bred until next year. I posted the question now so that I can make yard improvements and such without being in too much of a hurry.

Sounds like to me, you're going about it in a GREAT way!! Most people get the dog, then ask questions... You sound like you're going to be a great APBT owner!!! Welcome to the insane asylum!! lol

I thought of another suggestion. If anyone asks you, "What breed is She?" Answer, "Some mixed breed or Mutt" this way they aren't as interested. If they just ask the pedigree, Answer, "I don't know. It's a rescue or a mutt." If they ask you if you want to breed her, Answer, "She's fixed."

Even if those aren't the true answers, they will make your dog less appealing.

It might help with those people who want to "follow" people home and get their dog.

I'm hoping to get a puppy from Blaizen. They're very nice folks and have the same breeding priorities that I'm looking for.

By the way, thanks all for the advice.

CoolHandJean gave great advice! I used to tell people that Mollie was a mutt all the time... I was afraid she would get stolen. That's great advice CHJ!!!
