Why Evolution is True

It's come up a lot lately, and there still seems to be a lot of misunderstanding as to what the Theory of Evolution is, and how it has been observed and proven to be true.

This video, which I urge everyone to watch, goes through the hypothesis behind evolution, and all of the evidence that has been amounted in the 150+ years since Darwin first proposed the idea.

Some really interesting stuff in here. Like, did you know that humans have the genes to produce yolk in their eggs? Obviously they're redundant genes, but the fact that they are there is strong evidence of evolution.

The video also raises some very interesting points at the end, around the reasoning as to why the US is the second from bottom country in the list of western nations and how much they accept evolution. Obviously this is strongly tied to how heavily religious a country is. The more religious, the less likely to accept evolution.

But what else they found out is more alarming. In a study, it has been found that the US is the most dysfunctional western country (by measurements of crime, murder rate, incarceration etc etc and how much the society is harmonious and takes care of itself) which leads to some interesting conclusions on why the US might be so much more religious than other western societies.

you definitely should. I've never found another video on the subject with so much in it. He goes through all facets of the theory, and all of the evidence that backs it up. The guy isn't as interesting to watch as, say, Ken Miller, but it's only 40 minutes of speaking and so much info you hardly notice that's he's a terrible public speaker http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif

I just love watching science knock down the walls of intelligent design with little to no effort http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/tongue2.gif

I haven't watched the video but I read his book with the same title. It's a good book.

An interesting item from the book (and maybe the video too) is humans can't synthesize vitamin C because our gulo gene is highly mutated. The interesting thing is chimps have an almost identical gulo gene as humans. Evidently a common ancestor of humans and chimps adopted a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. So when the gene mutated it wasn't fatal. Eventually the mutation was passed on to both chimps and us.

I haven't watched Ken Miller's video either but I read his book Finding Darwin's God. Miller is the only theist I know who doesn't think God created the first living cell. As an atheist, I agree with him. But this is the perfect place for him to play his god card since we don't know how abiogenesis occurred. Why doesn't he? I'm puzzled.

Because Ken Miller is a scientist and there are strong theories about abiogenesis, and it's thought it will be replicated in the lab within the next 10 - 20 years.

I'm not on the intelligent design bandwagon but I'm not 100% on the evolution bandwagon, though I GET it and why it makes sense.

give the video a shot, it might take you all the way. In scientific terms, evolution is as real as the existence of atoms.

It is more accurate to say there is strong speculation about abiogenesis. Abiogenesis is not part of the theory of evolution and hasn't reached theory status yet at least in the sense scientists normally use that word.

Anyway, abiogenesis is a popular place for theists, scientists or not, to play their god card. In fact, Ken Miller is the only one I know who doesn't.

Just watched this video, I thought it was pretty good. I like how they also talk about what would refute evolution, true science right there.
