I took my sister out for her birthday yesterday and we went and watched the movie "8 Below". It's inspired by a true story and it's about 8 Alaskian Huskies being left in the Antartica chained up because the owners had to get to a hospital, and they couldn't get back because of bad weather. It's sad and wonderful at the same time how 6 of the dogs survived for 6 months on their own.

Mrs. Sin and I went to see "Eight Below" too... [we had free tickets to a matinee... one advantage of being old and retired]
It's a real tear-jerker of a story for anybody who's a dog-lover. I consider myself as a pretty hardbitten guy, and even I got a bit choked-up at parts of the story. I told Mrs. Sin that it must be my allergies acting-up again. ![]() Actually, the story is based on a set of real facts involving a 1958 Japanese antarctic expedition in which they left something like 12~15 dogs on the ice and there were three of 'em still alive when they returned many months later. This film needs to be seen on the big screen... a DVD on your tube won't do it scenic justice. Beautiful photography, admirable dog training [Huskies aren't noted for being easy to train], beautiful dogs, no sex, no foul language, no car-chases, no guns, no notable music, no nudity [well, only the dogs were without clothing], no violence [except for some hapless seagulls and a scary leopard seal] ... and a simplistic storyline. Still, I'm not sorry I spent the time watching it. |

I think it's rooted in childhood, & maybe it's a guy thing. Young boys form a real attachment to their first pet dog (I did--her name was Bonnie, she was an auburn-haired Collie mix, I'll never forget her). I'm not a dog person now, but when I was a kid she was my best friend.
Damn dog movies. *sniff* ![]() |

Seeing this thread I feel the need to warn all of you, and you may pass this on to your friends and family who are thinking of seeing this movie.
If you or anyone you know has to opportunity to see "Date Movie", DON'T! If you/they do, you/they run the risk of slipping into a coma. Horrible boils will fester all over your body and slowly you will lose all motor skills. THAT is how bad this movie is. Honestly, I'd rather see Brokeback Mountain, (which i already suffered through once), with George Michael sucking the cream out of a crispy creme donut sitting right next to me than see the horrible waste of time Date Movie is again. |
