Are Africans in USA African-Americans?
If Obama is the first African-American president then aren't all blacks in America regardless of their ethnic background African-American? Just wanted to hear everyones views about identity. I'm only posting this because I've seen a lot of African vs Afram threads. From what I've seen in the United States - Africans, West Indians etc. are grouped as all African-Americans by others and some identify as such. Thanks |

Some African Americans do not consider Barak an *African* American in the same sense because he is not a descendant of Black slaves brought to colonial America. His father is Kenyan. Most Africans Americans living in the US today are descended from Black Slaves. History is somewhat different.
I can say, most people in the America's with Black ancestry are descended from Black/African Slavery. All leftovers. |

Personally i think african-american is for those who ahve been living many generations and DONT know due to to slavery, their country or better yet, Ethnic group of origin. While Africnas moving to the United States WILL generally know this informatoin, therefore they are not African-americans, but rather, Bamoun Americans, or Cameroonian-Americans, Kenyan-Americans, etc. If, Nuyoricans can be Nuyoricans and Dominicans be Dominican-american or even Dominican-york, why not respect a VERY solid and OLD ethnic groups that have thousands of years of continuity, and put them as the first identifier. I think African-american is best left for people that don tknow their origins. Same case for me in the Carribean, i can be Afro-carribean cause i dont realyl know my African-ethnic origins, makes no sense for me to identify wtih only one group, but genetics will be changing that!, atleast partially.

To me they are the real African Amercians in the true sense of the word. Aframs to me should be called Black Americans, they are African descended but not African IMO. But, I disagree with Aframs be labelled Black Americans as many are not Black. I AM BLACK! Why should someone like Blake Griffin or Mariah Carey be called "Black" and not me when I am way purer? Either that term Black is abandoned by all (which I don't mind as it has never been clearly defined to my liking) or it remains being a reference to people like myself that have a phenotype/skin tone/etc that matches it. |
