type msconfig in run comm./startup tab/ then see if sidebar.exe is checked. If it isn't, check it, than apply and when you restart, it will show up.

Try Control Panel/Appearance and Personalization, it should say whether the option is there to start when windows starts

One thing you don't do when giving someone computers advice is go straight to msconfig and registry edit stuff as the first choice of troubleshooting. That will be a big risk especially with someone who doesn't know computers and may be over kill in case like this where an item may just simply be hidden because person may have accidentally hidden it.

If you right click on the desktop, do you see the context menu with a menu item "Gadgets" or "Personalize" or both?

I don't like giving tech advice but sometimes doing a system restore will get you back to where you want to be

Codrus I know you were joking about the Format comment but some places that would get you banned if you did not make if more obvious it was a joke. Consider the fact you have a person who is not real computer savvy and also is young

I agree that it's "sometimes" but it's not reliable. Also it may make changes you didn't want. If you made any new changes after sidebar disappeared then doing system restore could undo those changes.

I would avoid system restore and msconfig and registry edits for now. I really think it's just something as minor as it just being hidden or having "auto hide" or similar.
