how does companys like Google, Askjeeves, dogpile ect. make the amount of money they do. i just see a few ads on the sides of them but do they get money everytime someone clicks a link in the seach engine or does it come just from the ads. this is something that i always wanted to know.

companies "purchase" a word or phrase, and then it is linked to an ad ( which the company has to pay for as well )...
