Ubuntu Question

My internet was interrupted because of some issues we were having. Once it got up and running again, my desktop won't connect.

When i look at the NIC, there is the yellow light, but no green blinking. I would normally just abandon the NIC, and get a new one. However...

....i have recently had an issue with my USB that never happened. I was copying some stuff from an external HD to a jumpdrive, and in the middle of the transfer the USB failed (Cannot enumerate device on port 2). That was a day or two before the NIC failed.

As well, i don't have the network shortcut on the top toolbar (and don't know how to access those features without it). And when i got to system>preferences>network tools, it has always (since day 1) shown me that my "auto1 ethernet" has never been active. It is like the networking system does not recognize my ethernet connection. And if i try to plug in my external antenna for wireless, it no longer recognizes it. Even if the antenna turns on and starts blinking like it is connecting.

Today i started thinking: it is Ubuntu, and you have your home folder backed up on the external HD, so just reinstall Ubuntu and see if it will work. Problem: the disc isn't able to be read. It won't auto launch. If i double click it tells me that it is an autolaunch file, and asks if i want to launch. BUt then it tells me that the autorun tool is missing.

I got it to autolaunch 1 time by changing the boot order and booting the cdrom. But it froze, and then told me there was a problem with either the disc or disc drive.

So my question: is there something I am missing? Or is this box fried?

Second question: can i pillage the video card from this PC and use it on my Netvista? Or is there no part to take?

I guess I am just asking for some ideas. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.png

Sounds like motherboard or powersupply is at fault.

The motherboard is what i was afraid of. It is a very old computer. I bought it new back in like 2003. I can't complain. I got my money's worth from it.

Now to see if i can revive it, or the other one.

If you can replace the powersupply I would try that. It is very likely the cause. HOWEVER if this is an old dell computer DO NOT REPLACE the power supply without confirming if it has a proprietary Dell P/S in it. They use the same plug as standard P/S and if you plug one up you will set the unit on fire.

What do you want for a buck 98,a steak and egg sandwich on wheat toast and a serrano pepper on the side? http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.png
No,seriously,it's probably an antiquated processor that want handle many of today's games. And not the OS

shrub you are a moron. This is an existing system that crapped out not something that will not install. And if you new anything about Linux you'd know that many older systems do just fine with Linux. It's far more flexible then Windblows is about older hardware.

I game on the xbox. my computer in the den is strictly for the wife and son to browse the web, and maybe play a song or movie from our library of media on rare occasion.

Any serious computer work is done on my laptop. It has processing power, and software. I could care less if it plays games (except the free "tetris" game that comes with the OS...we like that sometimes).

The powersupply may be the answer. The fan has been working really hard for quite a while now. I have actually been nursing that fan along for awhile. It is the fan on the back, not on the inside.

actually, this is the system that you helped me save from the junkpile by walking me through how to set up Ubuntu. It has worked for what, another 2 years without any real issues?

Mom has a dell with Ubuntu, but she doesn't like it. Maybe her and I can make a deal. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.png It is about the same as the one i have, only a year or two older.

Yep,I see a new cooling fan in your future, sounds like the bearings are going. 10.10 is the latest version.
Good Luck

So i poked around a little bit. Found that for some reason my networking had been disabled as a privilege for the administrator. I don't know how it happened, as i didn't change it. But i re-enabled wireless and ethernet and both work very well now.

Toossehew 04-30-2011 05:05 AM

What about the USB? I thought you said that had failed as well?

Knongargoapex 04-30-2011 06:33 AM

It came back up after i restarted.

I still can't get wireless to work...but it is ok. i have a hard wired connection run to it.

I also found why my jump drives that are larger than 4gb don't work in my DIVX player or XBox...they have to be FAT32. To make my HD work directly with my xbox i am going to have to move everything off of it and reformat it. Not gonna happen....but now i can use my 32gb to store larger amounts of files for viewing. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.png

It was an enlightening day overall.
