I have a desktop computer running XP. I want to set up a folder on that computer that i can share across a fairly wide wireless network (maybe 100 access points).
I need to be able to share with my laptop, as well as a coworkers laptop (xp and vista, respectively). I would like to make it private outside of specific systems. Is this possible? |

Without a server that gets very complicated. It is also impossible unless all the computers are running XP Professional and Vista Business or Vista Ultimate. This can't be done on any Home version of Windows. You can share files but you can't restrict access.
Each computer will need to have the same set of users on each machine with the same set users and passwords. If you have an Amy, Bob, and Charles user then each machine will need to have setup Amy, Bob, and Charles. Next each computer will need a unique computer name and belong to the same workgroup. Lastly you need to setup a shared folder and only assign permissions to the users that you want to have access. If you don't want Bob to access the folder then you would give Read and Write permissions to Amy and Charles. |

You can setup a ubuntu box as a samba server. That can emulate a windows server and give you the access control you need. Really the only option you have but it's dirt cheap and a very old computer can serve in this roll. You can even download free linux software packages like eBox to perform this roll.
