This is just great!

I bought a used gateway computer from Raggs, right now all I have is dial-up till they come set up broadband, I went to connect to internet and I am told I have no dial up modem..wth! It has a phone plug on back of pc, is it possible that it has come lose or something? This is not good, not good at all, I bought a computer I cant use....lol I know you can buy an external modem but I want to say they run about $100...not happening lol Any advice?

The "phone plug" is probably the network connection. You might still need an external modem. I can look at home see if I still have any old ones. If you get broadband they usually supply you the modem.........don't they? It's been so long since i've set up anything like this.

Correct. Most modern computers do not come with dial up modems any more. The phone plug that you saw is a Cat 5 plug. It's has more wires then a phone plug. A phone wire has a jack that will plug into it but it's like trying to connect your water faucet to your gas line. They are both pipes but carrying way different product.

The modems that DSL lines or cable uses are completely different kinds of modems. They are all called modems because they MOdulate and DEMODULATE analog signals and convert them into digital signals.

If just have to have one I might have an old dial up modem that I could spare for $10-15. Not sure I have one. I'd have to scrounge around my junk pile. PM me if you really need it.
