Who's the Geek?

So, I traded my Brother a 1.2 ghz tuatlin (SP?) based PC I put together for a Sega Dreamcast with a million games.

20 minutes into Gauntlet Legends it stopped reading the CD's. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/icon_mad.gif

so I went online & found some repair guides, took it apart, turned a potentiometer on the Laser housing to adjust it's speed & now I'm back to classic gaming glory.

So THAT'S what it sounds like to others when I start talking about NASCAR and race/qualifying setups. I see... http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...n_confused.gif

I'm impressed. I can do that stuff but I generally don't have the time to waste on that level of work anymore.

Nice! Great work getting it back in working order...about a year ago I had to do surgury to a 25 year old PDP-11 hard disk pack. The platters stopped spinning and our customers were DESPERATE to get it working again (the systems modern replacement was still in the design/pretesting phase.) I get to the clients site head into their "computer room" its well into the upper 100F in there are the data storage cabinent has about an inch of dust caked in it... long story short after about an hour or two of head scratching and exploring. I replaced two resistors and a capacitor and the disk pack came back to life. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../icon_cool.gif

I'm as far from a geek as you can get, but shouldn't that room be air conditioned, Ponderous? WOW 100F

I hear ya.
Back when I was just out of college & things like DVD players still cost $300 I took a lot of things apart to fix.
I'd say about 75% made it back together. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...on_mrgreen.gif

These days though, surface mount tech makes it almost impossible to work on things.

You just order a new board.

But, it was actually a very simple fix.
Simpler then I expected.

PDP-11 hard disk pack I had to look that up.
That is from a time long before I had a notion what a soldering iron was. LOL!
