Default Taxes and BAS/BAH?
Going through Turbo Tax for my taxes this year, and under the heading of Non taxable income, Under the "Explain this" tab for this page, it mentions " - Military basic quarters and subsistence allowances". So does that mean i can claim my Basic Allowance for Housing, and Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAH/BAS)?

Only claim what is on your W2. That's what your base tax rate is calculated against.

If I remember correctly, that means your BAH/BAS will count against you in figuring Earned Income Credit....and yes, you would have to claim it if you are getting EIC.

No. Block 1 of your W2 only list your taxable income from 2010 and does not and should not include any allowances such as BAH/BAS. So, you are only taxed on the amount in block 1.

Separate issue...Turbo Tax is not talking about claiming it as taxable income. It is claiming your non-taxable income which is used to compute EIC. He won't be taxed on anything he puts in the "non-taxable" income block...hence the term "non-taxable income"

With the high unemployment and underemployment that has plagued our country and some of the states having budget problems, I'm surprised the IRS and the states have not figured out how to tax BAH and BAS. Most states tax military retirees pensions and tax your property at up to 100% of value. Nebraska has a measly 16,000 military retirees, yet will not exempt them from paying income tax on their pensions and paying property taxes. So, the military retiree population will always be small in Nebraska.

It's not going to help or hurt you...you still aren't paying tax on that money.

You seem to under the impression that it's some sort of advantage to you to claim income? Not sure what you are getting at.
