Default Do you consider modern Egyptians to be "arabs"?
I consider Egyptians to be arabs because from a linguistic and genetic point of view they are highly Southwest Asian influenced. What's your opinion?

Except for the Copts of course.

I don't think the majority are of Arab descent. There is a big Arab influence at their gene pole but the number is smaller than the native ones.

They're quite Arabized the truth is. Not the Copts though.

However I don't consider them Arabs. To me only the Arabic peninsula is Arab.

I consider them ethnically Egyptians and then linguistically, Arabs, as in Arabic speakers.

but arab genes make almost half of their genes
people from Rabat or Oran speak arabic but they're not arabs because they haven't arab admixture

but they're also ethnically arabs If they were just linguistically "arabphones" I wouldn't consider them arabs they're actually more "arab" than Lebanese people who only have a semitic affinity with arabs and have little to no arab admix while Egyptians have actually arab genes from Arabia

I didn't know there was such a thing as "Arab genes". I'll say Afro-asiatic since they have genetic affinities with all of their neighbors.

From the Egyptians I've met, Upper Nile region (Cairo to be exact) looked and probably were Arabs. But its like saying Do you consider Iraqis "Arabs" or "Kurds" or whatever, and it all really depends but if the majority are "Arabs" and the Government is Arab than they should be refered to as Arabs. Simple!!

Doesn't mean they're all Arabs i'm gently highlighting that Arabs are a majority...Maybe we can refer them as "Mixed Arabs"

As you near toward Sudan I would bet the people become more East African though.

I do believe that there's an Arab genetic influence, as I do believe that ancient Egyptians were probably darker.

I think that Ancient Egyptians would have had Southwest Asian affinities from the start but probably a larger amount of East African (Ethiopian type) ancestry and then as Arabs actually came to Egypt, this got diluted. Modern Egyptians still have East African genes around 15-20% don't they?

Affinities/Admix - whatever. Why do you have an incessant need to call them Arabs? I think they are Egyptian first and foremost, and "Arab" is a more of a cultural-linguistic grouping that binds them to their neighbors (in modern usage).

I think calling them exclusively Arab across the board is a way of separating them from their indigenous Egyptian roots.
