Default Prevalence of ethnic groups in literature

A graph tracking the number of mentions various ethnic groups got through the years in google's corpus of books. By far, Swedes and Jews got the most mentions. Any thoughts as to why?

(couldn't use English, French, or Dutch, unfortunately, because the mentions would've been both of the ethnic groups and the languages).

Very cool. The Jews aren't surprising, but the prevalence of the Swedes is quite interesting. The Irish 'spike' is also notable.

It would be nice to see a similar graph about the medieval era.
