Default Hottest place on Earth
Interesting that the Afars dress almost exactly identical to Somalis and stress that without Camels they would never survive. Camels is the edge that we have had against other African tribes, because of it we can easily live and flourish in places that they cannot
Afars are easily distinguishable from the shorter more robust highlanders that have come for opportunities to work in the salt mines

Any thoughts?

Camels were even popular with the American Cavalry because of that.

Looks like a really unhospitable place. With 42°C I can stand it to an extent, But 60 celsius? Wow, I wonder how they manage not to sweat their entire organs out?

The Afars I've seen have been shorter, skinnier, frailer and blacker skinned than the average Somali, with more chiseled jaws and greasier and straighter hair. I dont think they are that identical, (although I do agree Afars resemble Somalis moreso than Oromos do).

Camels are important to survival because climate is so harsh in Djibouti/Somalia. The Horn has more camels than any other region in the world. 6 million camels in Somalia alone. The only country that comes close is Sudan with 3 million. Camel milk is closest you can get to human milk.

Their cafes make camel milk lattes because it is more plentiful then cows milk.

I read somewhere that the desert I live in, in the Southwest USA is hotter only by the Sahara. So that's my answer and I'm sticking to it. We've been known to go higher than 120* Fahrenheit (49C)
