Liberation of Jigjiga, 1977
The world never thought that poorly armed and trained Somalis forces could defeat the heavily armed Ethiopia army which had the latest US tanks, which itself as a country had a massive population 10x that of Somalia. Many of the Somalis went on suicide missions, taking on Ethiopian tank core units with little more than simple light weaponry. Town after town Somalis forces were pushing on, not even stopping for a rest or to bury their dead. On September 1977, the Ethiopian were overwhelmed and entirely routed by Somali forces. It was a war of the like such as David and Goliath and to this day it still is. |
