Giants’ Barber Pondering Retirement After This Season
By Mike Rainey Mike Rainey 10/18/2006 11:17 am

Giants running back Tiki Barber, who leads the NFL in rushing with 533 yards, said yesterday at a promotional event for his new children’s book that he is likely to retire at season’s end to pursue his ample off-field opportunities, according to the New York Times. Barber said he was “leaning toward” retiring, and that he had “pretty much” made up his mind. Asked what would force him to reconsider, he said, “Nothing.”
Barber’s business agent, Mark Lepselter said it was possible that Barber could change his mind.
“He’s seriously leaning toward it,” Lepselter told the Times of his client’s possible retirement. “I think he feels he’s perfected his craft, in a way, and is ready for something else.”
Giants GM Ernie Accorsi said yesterday that he will wait until he hears some official word from Barber before making a statement on the future of his star running back.
“You do not replace Tiki Barber, he’s a Hall of Famer,” Accorsi said. “You have to go beyond the statistics to completely appreciate him, but I think he qualifies on numbers alone.”
Barber is one of the rare running backs on the wrong side of 30 who’s still an elite player. His 2,390 total yards last season was the second-highest single-season total in league history, and even though he’s yet to score a touchdown this season, he’s averaging 145 total yards per contest.
