8 names. Wow. That would provide a comedy writer with some fun. With so many names, some used by only one group of people, the possibilities for comedy confusion if the two groups meet would be pretty high. http://www.thailandqa.com/forum/imag...lies/smile.png

Thanks Lime.

Mikel.

Due to the fact that Thais can change there first Names any time they want (also in there ID Card), you can encounter that a Person has many Names.

For example, if somebody suffered from a long illness, it might be supposed that the first Name caused bad luck and so they change it.

Then about Nicknames: everybody has many different groups in his/her life, like family, school-friends, university-friends, colleagues, sport-club friends etc.
It can happen that any of these groups might call the Persone with a different Nickname not even knowing what there real Nickname is, given by the family.

For example: my wife has changed her first Name once in the Past and has 3 Nicknames, so she has 5 Names, I beat you by one http://www.thailandqa.com/forum/imag...lies/smile.png

Culture is fascinating.
On the name changing thing. I changed my middle and last name by Deed Poll, here in Australia, on my 40th. All legal and registered.
When visiting Germany my German friends were ASTONISHED that I had changed my name and that I had been ALLOWED to change my name. Apparently (Djaidee can affirm or challenge the accuracy of this report.) names are taken very seriously in Germany and it's a tough job to ever get yours changed legally. In fact you cannot name your child, in Germany, whatever you want, you have to show the name has a historical tradition behind it, in the bible or ancient texts or historical records of European history. If you tried to call your child "Sunflower" they'd not allow you, they would refuse to put it on the birth certificate.

OK so the current "record" is 5 names.

Anyone want to top that?

Mikel.

In Germany there are only five circumstances in which one is allowed to change one's name:

  1. On marriage: the couple can choose the name of one of the partners or they can keep their original names.
  2. Correction of a name: if the state has made an error with the name and this can be proven, the original name can be restored. Example: "Maſs" became "Mahs" and is corrected to "Mass".
  3. Unfortunate name: If a name is considered to be offensive (like "Hitler" or "Adolf", or if it is a swear word) it can be replaced by a better name.
  4. Gender reassignment in case of transsexuals.
  5. Naturalisation of a foreigner in Germany (Art. 47 EGBGB). In this case, the person may choose to adopt German forms of his first and last name, or a new first name if the old first name cannot be translated into German.

How Many Names?

A bit of a playful question.

How many names can a Thai Lady have? I'm interested to see what the most number for one lady any of us have encountered.

I have met one lady who had her Thai name, her English name "Kitty", another nickname "Wan" and another nickname "Rin". Four names, one tiny little person.http://www.thailandqa.com/forum/imag...es/tongue2.gif

Anyone know a Lady with more than four names? http://www.thailandqa.com/forum/imag.../laughlong.gif

Mikel.
