Hi guys,

Was wondering what do most Thai say to their elder during Songkran. Cause last year I visited my girlfriend's house and saw they wai and said somethings in thai and her parents will then pour water over her head. Was really interesting. Could anyone explain to me.

I think that there are no certain phrases which the people say to their parents or elder people. Everybody just thanks the parents/elder people in his/her way of thanking and showing respect.
Nothing special like a prayer.

Simply :
Choke Dii Bii Mai
or
Bii Mai suk san wan bii mai kau hai pua aow so tuk tuk kon jong mii ah yud sud kang palang manyuen

That will bring you a warm smile and a thank you.

Edited: The second is how it would be said in a North-Eastern dialect.

Cheer Stacker, can you please explain what it meant. Cause I don't want to be a fool saying it and does not really know what it mean during the Songkran period.

Up to you what you say!

In Thai, its called 'Hai oo-ai phorn' which translates to 'give a blessing'. Just say someting that resembles your blessing on a X'mas or b-day card.

Popular Thai style blessings are:

>Wish you the best in finding a rich handsome husband
>Wish you the best in finding a rich beautiful wife
>Wish you success in your job.
>Wish you win the lottery and are generous with your winnings
>Wish you the best of health
>Wish you get rid of that dog of yours that barks all night

can say anthing like..good health, long live, good luck etc
but you can say sth nice and funny if that person has good sense of humour.

normally..we would say to the elderly sth like please stay long with us with good health or thank to them for everything.
