THis is really out of the blue, but...
Rex-Kwan-Do patterned hakama: good idea or not? I'm not actually considering this, just so you know.

(The perplexing part, to me, is that while I found these in the "kendo" section of the awma.com website, these people are using a staff weapon?)

I am certain if they had those sort of Hakama in the mid 1800's, -and if forced at blade point, Commodore Perry would have elected to wear them.
