Now, I don't want it to sound like I'm generalizing, but this certain dojo seems to be full of cocky kenshi. I have no idea why. They all suck. Maybe it's cause they are 5-year 3-dans? Gee, took me well over 10 years to get my 3-dan. AND they line up ahead of me when we do seiza. |

MaxPayneWayne,
First off, you are not a true kendo student. You are a prideful American, kendoka wanna-be. You point your finger and say "That person is not humble! Look at me, I'm humble!" And, then you come here and boast about how good you are and how you beat the others and how much better your technique is and how clean it is and blah blah blah. Kendo is about learning, not boasting and whining, which you have apparently mastered. When doing keiko, you and everyone else is there to learn from each other. If you are better, it is your duty to teach those who are of lower rank than you. If you are a visitor to a dojo, you automatically do not have any seniority. That is the Japanese way. It is the sensei's business to take care of his students, not a visitor. Whiner. Why you join a strip mall karate club? |

yeah it seems assholish how you ASSumed that i came and tried to get ahead of them in line. they know who i am and they know i've been doing kendo and have been 3-dan longer than they have been. i've been going to that dojo for about 7 years now, and i ALWAYS ask the sensei personally if i can practice, and i ALWAYS thank the sensei after practice. it's kinda obvious that the sensei and i have an UNDERSTANDING. i know he'll let me practice, and i know that he knows that i'm thankful. but i guess you never heard of this saying in kendo: kendo wa rei ni hajimari soshite rei ni owaru. kendo begins with and ends with rei. or does your dojo not teach you this aspect of kendo? that's exactly what i do and alot of other kenshi out there as well. i've been going to this dojo ALOT longer than these other kenshi. so this is MY second dojo. i have alot of second dojo, but yet i always seem to greet the sensei before i start practice and personally thank the sensei after practice. and dr.hillsing, i think i should be fired up about this. you know why? these are supposedly 3-dan. shouldn't they at least personally thank the sensei, do keiko honorably, and be exceptionally respectful to the dojo, its kenshi, and the sensei? or does being 3-dan give you the right NOT to excercise these practices and allow you to line up in front of everyone? i don't want dojos to produce these buremono kenshi. these dojos should be teaching kendo etiquette and not just waza. oh, but i guess that would just be assholish right? My goodness!! Such a large ego... I expect better from a sandan. I've only been doing Kendo for 2 months, but I have a pretty good idea what is expected of someone of your rank. Trust me, my sensei would be most ashamed of you and your behavior. I feel ashamed for you myself. Have you no honor? What it means to be sandan... Being sandan means you must be humble and not wish to be at the head of the line. Being sandan means you put the younger Kenshi first before yourself. Being sandan means you do not boast. Being sandan means you understand that when you visit another dojo, no matter how long you've been visiting it, that you are not to be impolite and put yourself ahead of the students whose dojo it is in the first place. Being sandan means you follow the rules of the dojo you are visiting, no matter how well you are known there. Being sandan means that you don't get all mad and start swearing in posts when you don't get your way. Being sandan means that you don't try to beat down others in keiko. It's very rude. Not to mention dishonorable. You should not be proud of doing that. Being sandan means you don't say bad things about other Kenshi and call them names as you did in your first post. You should have grown out of that by now. Being sandan means the younger and less experienced Kenshi will look up to you. It is your responsibility to behave accordingly and act as a role model. In your posts you have not shown you are able to do this yet. Being sandan means you understand that there is no place for arrogance of any sort in the dojo or outside of the dojo. You have not proven you understand this yet. Well, that's my list of what it means to me, to be a sandan. Please excuse me if you think I am impolite, but I think it had to be said. Gomen nasai. I wish you would please think about the things in my list. Thank you. Kaoru |

MaxPayneWayne, There is no need to say "American." Anyone from any country can behave this way. It's not nice to single a specific group out and make generalisations. However, I agree with everything in the rest of your post. Kaoru |

And honestly, I don't know the rank of half the people in my dojo...we can assume they don't know your rank. Besides, even if they knew your rank by your face, you do wear a men and it kind of disguises you (even with a zekken). Also, if the practice was going for 45 minutes before these people came, and according to you, took a long time to change, couldn't it be possible that you missed them bowing to the sensei? I mean, you sound like you would be the model student, diligent and humble, focused with every movement. You couldn't be aware of the movements of these guests even if you were superman, if you were oh so great as you say you are. Like the rest of the people posting, i'm trying to say don't get so fired up over it, try to look at it through a different perspective and with reason. I was trying to give you that perspective...but then you had to go and talk about my own etiquette at my dojo (something you have no idea about). So yeah, I'll finish like everyone else, stop whining, be more humble. ![]() |

I think max has a lot of good points even though he sounds like a Jack @$$. His actions are respectful even though his thoughts are not....you can’t really get on him because he does all the "right" things. In Japan even when you don’t want to do something for your A-hole senpai, you have to do it. The senpai does not care if you like them or not, and they don’t care about what you think (It takes a big A-hole to think like this), all they care about is your actions. Is kendo not a reflection of a certain part of Japanese culture??? MAX can think disrespectfully if he wants to, all he is expected to do is “show” respect. So who is really wrong here????? Max who is doing the reigi tadashii things or the “chicken $hit” people that are being gyogi warui???? For the people that are still new to kendo (10 years or less) how would you know what its like to be in the position that max is? He may not deserve respect morally, but he should get it at the dojo. Isn’t part of kendo being humble and learning about humility? If max is as well mannered as he says he is, I believe that he has paid his dues to his senpai over the years( sounds like he is bitter about it hahaha), but when you get people that are new to kendo….sometimes they don’t abide by the same rules that applied to you. Some people that are new to kendo understand this kinda “sucky” but Atari mai part of kendo…manners, senpai/kohai, the Japanese culture…if you do not agree with this stuff, well maybe you should not be doing something at is dominated by these ideas. Monku attara deteke!!!! Sounds harsh…but you all have free will to stay in kendo or quit… part of doing kendo is being a part of this world.
max you sound like a hot shot...if you come to socal i will smack the crap out of you!! gahahahaha!!!! |

"You swine. You vulgar little maggot. Don't you know that you are pathetic? You worthless bag of filth. As we say in Texas, I'll bet you couldn't pour piss out of a boot with instructions on the heel. You are a canker. A sore that won't go away. I would rather kiss a lawyer than be seen with you. |
