Visitors V-Turn

Written by Cal Kemp

"V" was one of those things I grew up halfway terrified and halfway fascinated by. Lizard aliens secretly disguised as humans who invade the Earth and bite the heads off canaries? What more could you ask for? It was big and epic and felt like it could really happen. I learned then, no matter how friendly they may seem, never trust a space alien.

One of the best things about "V" is that it really holds up, two decades later. It's not just a badass alien-invasion story; it's has a sharp social commentary and, in many ways, now's the perfect time the "V" reinvention that Variety says is in the works (under the control of "The 4400" creator Scott Peters).

This new version of "V" features an updated world and a Homeland Security Agent, Erica Evans. The article states that the new version will focus on the idea of blind faith toward leaders but I'm already more than a little fascinated by what sounds like a decidedly conservative take on the subject matter. While what we know is very, very little at this point, the notion of a Homeland Security Agent learning the hard way that you can't trust foreigners no matter how friendly they seem is not something a lot of shows would tackle. We'll see if that's something the creators are going to embrace or pretend isn't there.

Speaking of creators, the bad news is that the original writer/director Kenneth Johnson is not involved in the project. The man has tried to keep "V" alive these many years (including writing a sequel novel that was released earlier this year). While I'm all for a fresh take I'm really, really hoping the Johnson comes on in some capacity or, at least, offers up his blessing to the project.

Strangely, it's mentioned that the new miniseries is also being developed as a videogame (or V-ideo game) . The trouble being that videogames that go franchise-first tend to suck.
