Default Listening Party: Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - Sun April 29, 2012. 11pm UK / 6pm EDT

FLEETWOOD MAC
RUMOURS

(WARNER BROS)
Released: February 1977
Chart: UK No. 1 / US No.1

  • Second Hand News
  • Dreams
  • Never Going Back Again
  • Don't Stop
  • Go Your Own Way
  • Songbird
  • The Chain
  • You Make Loving Fun
  • I Don't Want To Know
  • Oh Daddy
  • Gold Dust Woman

Rumours was recorded during 1976, mostly in Sausalito and Los Angeles, CA, amid a backdrop of major professional success and major personal turmoil. After joining the line-up at the start of 1975, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks' first record with the band, Fleetwood Mac (1975), was a slow burner that was taking off in a big way in 1976, climbing to US No.1 over a year after its release. But behind the scenes, Lindsey and Stevie's eight-year relationship was ending, as was the eight-year marriage between Christine and John McVie. To add to the problems, Mick Fleetwood was also in the process of a split from his wife Jenny, and some members of the band were developing a serious cocaine habit.

Released at the start of 1977, Rumours went on to spend 31 weeks at US No.1 and almost a year after its release it became the band's first UK No.1 album. It has been certified 19x platinum in the US and 11x platinum in the UK and worldwide sales are somewhere around the 40 million mark. It's safe to say that Rumours is huge. It also provided Fleetwood Mac with their only US No.1 hit single, "Dreams," which hit the top spot in the summer of 1977.

Some fun facts:
  • Its working title was Yesterday's Gone. John McVie suggested the title Rumours.
  • Christine and Stevie rented adjacent condos during the main Sausalito sessions while the guys stayed at the Record Plant's lodge.
  • The original tapes were damaged, leaving a specialist to painstakingly combine the original tapes with the safety master recordings.
  • Several Stevie songs considered for Rumours, and demoed but not used and later revived for solo projects, include "Planets of the Universe" and "Think About It."
  • Rumours is amazing.

Awesome! Hopefully I'll be here for this.

Stuck the thread though and added it to the first post in the Listening Parties Organisation thread.

Awesome! I didn't know we were going to start doing this. Rumours is one of my very favorite albums. Oh, and we can't forget about the biggest exclusion when it comes to Stevie songs originally recorded for Rumours: Silver Springs!!

ETA: Ha. Apparently, we've been doing this kind of thing for quite some time and I was never paying attention. I missed the listening party for Blue?! Damn.

Aaaand now I see the discussion about Silver Springs. Ok, I think I'm all caught up now! I'll just look forward to the listening party.

"Dreams" is one of my all-time favorite FM songs. Same goes for "Silver Springs." I really adore the performances of both of those songs from The Dance.

I think I've heard most of these songs on the greatest hits, but never the album version. I'll be listening along tonight!

I meant to keep the wine for the listening party...

... however, the wine was tasty, and I just kept drinking it.

To eliminate any confusion, are the versions people are listening to with or without "Silver Springs"? I can do either. But the 2004 reissue has it in the middle, at track 7, so it's going to be odd if some of us listen to "Silver Springs" as track 7 and some of us listen to "The Chain" as track 7. Let's decide!

This will be my first time listening to the album. Pathetic I know.

Menju, I think we should do the original track list.

My itunes only has the remastered version on here, so I was planning on skipping Silver Springs and going back to it at the end of the original track listing.

Great album! I love the S/T from 1975 too... maybe even a bit more than this one. Count me in!

I'm joining in on this, even though the only two Fleetwood Mac songs I know are 'Dreams' and 'Go Your Own Way'. I'll be interested to hear the album, as I know it's a classic. I probably won't be posting much during the listening party as this a new experience, but I thought I'd let you all know I'm here anyway

Yay! Its been ages since I listened to Rumours in full. A couple of weeks ago a friend and I listened to Tusk in full, on vinyl, and it was sweet!
