Evita (help)
Hey, I'm preparing a class that's gonna include Evita and the idea of mythified history or mythical character (and I plan to include discussion on the relation between the film's mythification of Evita and the fact that Madonna's involved, her own mythified self so to speak, or the parallels between the two ladies). Does anyone have any ideas I could totally steal borrow or interesting articles/books some might recommend?

Were you going to look at the original musical or just the movie? The musical itself is based on the slanderous book "Evita: The Woman With the Whip" by Mary Main. Many fans of the film who are unfamiliar with the original musical that it's based on don't realize what a villain the character of Evita is in the original piece. The musical had to be softened quite a bit for the crew to be allowed to film in Argentina.
In general, a good book about Eva Peron is "Evita: The Real Life of Eva Peron" by Nicholas Fraser and Marysa Navarro. |
Thanks a lot about that, I did not know. I'll mostly hang on to the film for it's a film class, but I'll make the necessary links of course.

Well, if you want books, THE books about Evita is "Santa Evita" by Tomás Eloy MartÃ*nez. I am almost 100% sure that it's been translated to English... let me check. Yeah, Amazon says there's an English edition. It has a mix of Evita the real person and Evita the myth that's very interesting.
There's a newer book called "Evita esa mujer" (a game of words: "evita" means also "avoid", so it can be read as "Evita, that woman" or "Avoid that woman") by Felipe Pigna. It has no version in English -I haven't read it but I've been told is very good. And there's of course "La razón de mi vida", the book that Evita wrote (at least she appears as the writer) that can give you a very subjective but interesting point of view about Evita. There's an argentinian movie called "Evita", it's not the only one but it's the best one, by Esther Goris and Victor Laplace. It was released more or less at the same time "Evita - The Musical" was, but it takes a totally different perspective, it's like those movies are talking about two different women. I have no idea if you can find subtitles in English, anyway. "Your body has left you, honey. It has defeated you. You have cancer, shit. You have cancer...". I like that movie A LOT. (don't know if some of this info was useful for you; you can ask me if you need any kind of data, as long as you can read Spanish :P) |
Thanks for all that, I don't understand spanish though, sadly (well, not yet!). I'm looking for that film right now.
