Default UK throws obstacles in the way of renewing British Passports for Brits in Israel
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/136985

As of early May, British citizens in Israel will no longer be able to renew their passports at the British Embassy in Tel Aviv. Instead, they will have to do so by mail to the British Embassy in Paris.

Embassy officials in Tel Aviv say the change has nothing to do with British anger at Israel over the Dubai assassination/forged passport affair, and that it is being implemented “throughout the region.”

In fact, a notice to this effect appears prominently on the websites of both the Tel Aviv British Embassy and the Cairo British Embassy. No similar notice appears on the websites of the embassies in Amman, Damascus, or Beirut, however.

As of May 3, 2010, all passport applications from Israel will be processed and printed centrally at the British Embassy’s Passport Processing Centre in Paris. The change in Egypt takes effect on Thursday, April 15.

The British embassy website explains that the changes are “part of a global initiative to streamline and modernize the UK’s overseas passport operation. The UK remains one of the few countries printing passports in Embassies and Consulates abroad. This is expensive to do and is less secure as we have to transport blank passports around the world.”
It also notes that by the end of 2010, there will be seven Regional Passport Processing Centres worldwide, six of which are “already in place covering Europe, the Americas, Australasia and Southern Africa.”

Mr J. B. Mee, head of the Tel Aviv British Embassy’s Consular Section, recently wrote to an applicant that “Washington DC is, for example, producing passports for the whole of North America, and Wellington for the whole of Australasia.”
