Default Hermann Hesse: Beneath The Wheel
Had to look the english title up. I will refer to this book by its German title, if that's all right with you. Unterm Rad is my favorite Hesse book, I think, which might be due to my dislike for much of his other work.

Unterm Rad is a tender little book about a gifted boy who is educated to ruin.
It is highly recommended. It's very well written, almost every page is quotable, it's moving, smart and happily it lacks much of the Superman ideology that poisons later books such as Demian that feature similar characters.
