Written On The Body by Jeanette Winterson, whose books I'm slowly working my way through. More plot than some of her other books, but a somewhat melodramatic plot and chock full of reminiscences about ex-lovers all of whom are impossibly weird and caricature-like. Absolutely lapidary prose. It wasn't the artifices of Winterson's highly allusive and digressive style that failed the book as much as its combination of an lyrical, often profound tone with an emotionally somewhat stumblefooted narrator, scared of commitment, mopey about it and imagining he or she is making a deep sacrifice to take whichever exit route presents itself. An excellent quick read for an afternoon off.
