Default Toyota getting railroaded
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,585221,00.html

First it was stuck accelerator pedals... then it was breaks on the Prius, seemingly started solely by the Apple co-founder... now it's Corolla's power steering...

And for every one of these, a congressional hearing, and the inevitable class-action lawsuit.

Is it just me, or did someone buy off our elected officials to railroad what is unquestionably the most reliable car maker in the world, deep into the recession or possibly even into bankruptcy? I'm normally not a fan of conspiracy theories, but I can't help to see Mr. Toyoda in the water with sharks circling.

well, if you ask me, they see a potential for a problem and are taking preventative action, good for them rather than hopping it just goes away!

Fox News link - check
Ostentatious claim about reliability based on manufacturer, even though three discrete and legitimate claims against the reliability of the manufacturer are in public scope - check
Conspiracy theory - check

Gnius, take a nap.

Seriously, are you going to take a dump on EVERY one of my threads? It's not really funny anymore.

Would it be better if I posted the SAME ****ING STORY from another source? Seriously, give it a ****ing rest.
Wow...

So, yeah, my point was, Toyota is reliable and Arthur-Anderson is trust-worthy. No single major collapse will ever change that.

Bad day?

There are even if there hasn't been any... if you know what I mean. This is too much of a good thing to pass up in the litigious nightmare that is the United States.

There are something like 6 MILLION Toyotas sold in the US every year. Even WITH the press coverage, there've been less than 100 claims of injuries covering all of the problems... and we can safely assume not all of them are true.

So we have 100/6'000'000... I'll take my chances in a Toyota thank you, rather than something from GM that is made of cheap plastic and will fall apart after 2 years.

How many newer GM products have you personally owned? I have a 06 GM vehicle and it has given me 0 problems within the 97,000 miles I have put on it. GM's quality has gotten a LOT better than it used to be. I have owned older GM cars in the past and they had all kinds of problems after 150k, but that's kind of expected.

It's like anything else in the media, it's sensationalized beyond imagination and the sheep that is the American consumer will gobble it up like it was part of the 10 commandments. Soon everyone will know someone who crashed because of faulty brakes and all the hardcore conservatives I know will blame it on the Chinese/Obama. The liberals will try to take over Toyota to correct the problem themselves, unsuccessfully.

As long as Toyota didn't ignore the issue and try to sweep it under a rug for months on end, in my view they are doing everything right and responsibly in regards to the recalls. It sucks for their image, but I don't think it will affect them in the long run if they can get the issues fixed quickly.

Yeah there does seem to be some sort of a conflict of interest when the major stake holder in two of America's car firms is holding congressional hearings into their Japanese competitor.

How the mighty have fallen in 2008, 2009, and now 2010.

The world is going bananas.

That's what I mean. How can you celebrate a good company being screwed by companies that can't get their act together to compete on the open market?!

Why don't you just mandate that GM and Ford employees get lifetime government pensions for being GM and Ford employees and be done with it... this way nobody else has to suffer through driving a Taurus.

I would rather be caught dead in a Taurus than alive in a Corolla.

The new Tauruses are actually pretty sweet looking. I drove a Taurus for 8 years before I bought my truck .

Two years ago I drove my (then) gf's 2004 Ford Taurus. It blew. The suspension was terrible, the car would roll in the corners, it had major electrical and mechanical issues, and when we opened it up, it was clear how far up the ass the build quality had gone.

At the time, I was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry. Since then, we sold the Taurus (got barely over $1k for it)... and though we have another car, we've kept the Camry. It's now going on its 12th year, and still drives beautifully. Aside from the normal wear/tear there is nothing wrong with it... and it can still be sold for $3-4k, even though my dad originally bought it used in 2001 for $13k.

Both the market AND the real-world depreciation on most american cars are disgusting... and reflect exactly how well Ford and GM can compete. Have they gotten better - sure... but they really could only go UP from where they've been the last decade.

I know what you mean. I had a good experience with my Taurus, but it was a '95. Got me through school and the job search until I could afford something new.

It's sad that it takes a major competitor's failure to make things level in the market. I'd rather see innovation and quality push someone ahead. Ford quality has gone up in the last 2 years IMO, hopefully they keep heading in the right direction. When I was test driving trucks, the only one I really was dissatisfied with was Chevy Silverado. It just felt like such an old out-dated vehicle. Toyota trucks were ugly as sin in 2009 so I stayed away from those. Ford was my choice, but being that I am related to a Chrysler employee I opted for a Dodge truck with a huge discount.
