Default $1.2 Billion for bike paths...
Why do you care? Virtually none of this is your money.

On the other hand, approximately 86$ of my money went to it.

$1.2B nationwide for the US is nothing

Toronto would spend that much on the downtown core alone for bike ****
Isn't this some type of debate fallacy? Like the loss of freedoms in the US isn't a problem because other countries have much less freedoms? Arguments like that?

That's a couple orders of magnitude smaller than federal highway spending. The horror!

I still want to know what they're spending money on? It's obvious where highway money goes. Where does this go?

I don't own a bike. Justify my family's expenditure of 140$ per annum.

My new job forces me to drive >50 mi/day.

The government gives me a big fat subsidy by spending a ton of money on US-59. It seems equitable that bikers get theirs.

I don't drive either, so "relieving congestion" doesn't work.

why can't they ride in the street or the sidewalk? Why do you need special bike lanes? In Philly, all it takes on some roads is just the road having a painted lane put down.
Intermixing bikes and cars is a disaster.

Bike lanes are great, IF they are used. Toronto's making major ****ing roads bike lanes and few use them.

How is it a disaster? What are these bike lanes you all are talking about? Just painted demarcations, right? How much can they cost to paint?

Philly bike lanes:

Yes, that's the lane...
Those cars should be ticketed.

I'm no fan of cyclists (****ing dicks), but I'd rather they have their own lane than drive on the road. Cyclists don't obey the rules of the road, and if you bump them you're both in a world of hurt (you financially, them physically).

Again, Asher, but how much can the painted demarcations cost?
The roads usually need to be made wider, medians altered, curbs moved, signage changed, etc. It adds up, especially nationally...

And you don't need it on EVERY road (one, because there are sidewalks after all where people can ride their bikes especially since all the corners have depressions) just every few roads (like a bike lane on 12th street, then you can skip a couple before putting a bike lane on let's say 9th street, etc.) $1.2B won't put them on every road...

I've seen it plenty when they make the bike lanes 'round here.

Yes it is. Bicyclists piss me off. They've become some of the rudest segment of society.

That's why you have some dividers in addition to the lines for bike lanes. But even simple dividers cost a lot of money and introduce complications that take some thought in designing around.

Mostly, I think that in cities on major arteries (low speeds), bikes should get their own lanes that are blocked off from other traffic, just as cars and peds get their own blocked off lanes. It's a sign of modern planning and construction, like sidewalks that are disabled-friendly.

It's just poor planning and construction that makes this so. Cyclists exist, so you better make it safe, easy, and pleasant for them to get around without annoying people.

DanS, have people ever told you how annoying your constant level-headed rationality is?

Sheeesah-- some people being rational-- how crazy is that??
Don't you start too. I've had it with this ****.

If we wanted sanity, we wouldn't be looking for people's opinions online.
