Default Advice: Trip to LA
I'll be in Los Angeles, California from November 8-11 for something totally non-orchid related (annual meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists at the LA convention Center).

Looking for a chance to tie in something orchidaceous to the trip. Any suggestions? BTW, Won't have a car. Thanks!

We're just crossing paths in CA. I don't know too much about the public transport where you're headed specifically, but if you can figure out a way to get to SBOE, Andy's and Cal Orchids...it's hard to imagine I'm sharing anything new with you here--I haven't been to any of the latter, but I'd sure like to visit.

Ernie, L.A. county is huge. It's going to be tough to get to get to any orchid nurseries without a car. It would be well worth renting one.

Santa Barbara Orchid Estate is in (of course) Santa Barbara, which is about a ninety-minute drive up the coast. I was there about two years ago. I was with family who were itching to move on to the next venue, so I was only able to spend about an hour there. I could spend days going through all their greenhouses! Oh, well!

Andy's Orchids is in Encinitas, which is south of Oceanside. That's half-way to San Diego.

Cal-Orchids is also in Santa Barbara.

Depending upon where you'll be in L.A., try checking out the Huntington Gardens in Pasadena. They're gorgeous!

Good luck!

I would not ride a bus in LA for anything. Rent a car or find a friend.

Catch the Coaster, get to San Diego and grab a surf board!!! The WATERS GREAT!!!! See if you can get down to the S.D. Zoo, they have a great display there and I believe you'll be here when it's actually open to the public...very secretive in there.....

Of all our vacations, Cali was the most expensive car rental, but didn't see any other way to get around in a timely manner. Taxi would of been next choice.

I just googled quickly for LA, and apparently there is something called the FUBAR, don't know if it interests you or not...

Other than that, Norito, or Harold who is very close in LA. There is as well Bill Fogarty, but I don't know if he is still alive or not ??? Great grower, great plants... That's him who got the FCC lowii Exotic Dancer, really an amazing plant the size of a kolopakingii...

Sorry for the idiot advice, Ernie--it was idiot advice for your time frame anyway. I impulsively strung the cities together having looked at this recently for my own reasons: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/Conten.../1237405732511 Not enough time...then one has to get from the train to said nurseries. Oh well.
