Everything we know happened in the past, and the past is over. Therefore there's no need to comment on anything, ever.

In fact by the time you finish reading this it will be in the past, so no need to comment on it. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

History is entirely relevant to understanding the present.

God, that's a terrible title.

Yeah, we did a terrible thing...
Each time I hear/read about the vietnam war I can't get this old song out of my head:

In 1965 Vietnam seemed like just another foreign war, but it wasn't
It was different in many ways, and so were those who did the fighting
In World War II the average age of the combat soldier was 26...
In Vietnam he was 19

(TV announcer's voice)
The heaviest fighting of the past two weeks continued today
25 miles north west of Saigon
Wasn't really sure what was going on (Vet's Voice)

Nininini Nineteen, 19, Ni-nineteen 19
19, 19, 19, 19

In Vietnam the combat soldier typically served a twelve month tour of duty but was exposed to hostile
fire almost everyday
Ninininininininininin 19 nininininninin 19
(TV announcer's voice)
In Saigon a US military spokesman said today : "More then 700 enemy troops were killed last week in that sensitive border area. Through out all of South Vietnam, the enemy lost a total of 2.689 soldiers."

(Vet's Voice)
" You're eightteen years old and you're wearing somebodies brains around on your shirt, because they got their heads blown off right next to you .. and that's not suppose to affect you"
"I could never understand"
"What would scare me ? ... is that we were to send a group of eightteen year olds 12.000 miles away, and subject them to in a year of that obsanity, and have them not be affected ... "
"That's what would frighten me"

(Singing Girls)
All those who remember the war
They won't forget what they've seen...
Destruction of men in their prime
whose average was 19
Dedededededede-Destruction
Dedededededede-Destruction
War, War
Dededede-Destruction, wa-wa-War, wa-War, War
Dedededededede-Destruction
War, War

none of them recieved the hero's welcome
none of them recieved the hero's welcome

According to a Veteran's Administration study
Half of the Vietnam combat veterans suffered from what Psychiatrists call a
Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder
Many vets complain of alienation, rage, or guilt
Some succumb to suicidal thoughts
Eight to Ten years after coming home almost eight-hundred-thousand men are still fighting
The Vietnam War

Vietnam, Saigon, Vietnam, Saigon

When the average age is 19, including the officers, it means the average foot soldier was at best 18.

Did the US really do a good job sending 18 yo kids to war?
Remember, the average age of US soldiers during WW2 was 26.

Where did I say that this will necessarily change anything?

vNZsk39B 02-17-2009 06:44 PM

Gee, Some GIs were against the war there, and blacks were discriminated against in the 60's.
I didn't realize this before. I thought everyone supported that war and MLK fixed the country and blacks haven't been discriminated since. THIS WILL OPEN MY EYES. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif Thanks so much for letting us know.

Wouldn't we have to watch it first before we can figure that out? http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif
Seeing as it stars Fonda and Sutherland, I'd say you're more likely to be enlightened by watching 24 than this film.

Remember, the average age of US soldiers during WW2 was 26. Thats because we had 3-4 times as many people under arms in WWII. The way a draft works is it for the most part focuses on the more fit age groups (younger) before tapping other age groups (older).

So without seeing the film, you have already presumed that there is no new information in it about anti-war movements, racism, and sexism?
You have presumed that there is new information?

Even given that we know much of this stuff already on the broader scale, there may still be new information in the specifics. Provide an example for the kind of revelatory information society has not known that will be revealed in this film?

I guess I cannot make any presumptions either.

The counterculture was about a lot more than dirty hippies and marijuana.
Blaupanzer is right. There was also tons of sex and oodles of LSD.
