It's very good, and very influential. If, however, you've been reading comics in the last twenty years, you may not be as impressed, as it won't seem all that new to you. Kinda like how Velvet Underground sounds the same as what we've been listening too the last twenty years. The problem with being revolutionary and influential is that eventually, everything becomes the same.

Picked it up from the bookstore across the street from my office to read during lunch on a whim. Ended up taking it home and reading it straight through. It's fantastic, even if you've never read a comic book/"graphic novel" before (I hadn't). |

I looked this up on Wikipedia once, and IIRC the naked blue guy does not care for ladies all that much since he became naked, blue and omnipotent. Or for the human race for that matter. He sees our problems as beneath him now. So Wikipedia said, and that's why I decided I didn't care to get the comic. If the Wiki entry was wrong and the comics aren't about some naked guy floating through space while soliloquizing about the insignificance of humanity, please tell me.

--" Then I switched to the James Bond novels. Watchmen came out, what, like 20 years after that."
Watchmen was late 80s. The Bond novels started in the early fifties according to Wikipedia, so a bit more ^_^ You should definitely give it a try. --"Excellent book, highly recommended. I'm curious to see how well it translates to a movie, though...and if the studio has the balls to keep it intact." More intact than it could have been. Script before the one they're actually using had modified it to be an anti-terrorism story *sigh*. Still, there's a lot in there to cram in to a 2 or 2-1/2 hour movie. Don't have very high expectations for the movie, but it could be decent. Still wish they had been able to get the funding to let Gilliam make a mini-series out of it. That would have been great. --"Wraith came back! Well, for one post." I come back from time to time, although I usually only post in the anime threads. --" If the Wiki entry was wrong and the comics aren't about some naked guy floating through space while soliloquizing about the insignificance of humanity, please tell me." You've been told already, but I'll say it again. That's a somewhat odd interpretation of the Wiki entry in the first place, and isn't correct. There isn't really a single main character, and Dr. Manhattan, while important to the plot, isn't the focus of it. Rorschach. Nite Owl and Silk Spectre are the main POV characters. The story's more about Rorschach investigating the death of one of the early heroes, which leads to some unexpected places. Wraith "Funny story. Sounds unbelievable. Probably true." -- Rorschach ("Watchmen") |
