Default Biggest waste ever??? Throw away DVD's. 48hr limited playback
WOW... I was just at the local gas station getting some drinks for tonight and saw something what made me stop and literally say WTF??? A DVD "Rental" that you purchase and when you open it it activates some type of time sensitive material that ruins the DVD after 48 hours. This is one of the dumbest things i think i have ever seen. why not just let me keep the DVD instead of having me waste it and throw it away...

I'm guessing either something on the dvd reacts with air or light and thats why once outta the package it degrades after 48 hours.

Maybe you should buy another and open and play it only in a room with no light, then see how long it lasts, if it still degrades after 48 hours, then it probably does it by reacting with air somehow.

EDIT:
Well that was a good guess!

Just had a thought, though, Whats to stop someone playing this on a dvd player then recording the film on a dvd recorder.
Kinda defeats the object? Eh??

are they expensive? my cable service offers loads of movies that you can rent for 24hours from there on demand service and alot of them cost more than you see them for in pound shops! or nearly half as much as the dvd would cost anyway lol

It is a pretty cool idea but $6!?

That is too much for a DVD rental. With all the options like PPV, HD onDemand movies, iTunes movie system, etc. I don''t see that staying around too long.

It reminds me of the DIVX movie rental scheme that Circuit City attempted.

Well if all that degrades is the seal between the two layers, couldn't you just take some super glue and reseal the sides?

If that works, then you've got a $6 new movie.

EDIT: And I just realized, these discs have to cost more to manufacture (not to mention the R&D) than a regular DVD, they contain all the same info as a DVD, yet they cost 1/3 of the price... why don't they just offer regular DVD's at this price point?
Dreaming, I know...

I remember reading about them a year or so back. The laser in your reader somehow triggers the dye to have some sort of chemical reaction and destroy itself. So while they say 2 days to watch it, I'm sure you can open it and put in on the sideboard for a few weeks before watching it fine.

It's most likely 2 days from when you first play it before it becomes unreadable.

And how exactly would you do that?

No, that's not how these particular ones work, read the link posted.

Seems kind of silly when places like walmart are so aggressive at dropping DVDs down to the 5-7.50$ mark already.

I don't think I can think of a bigger waste in materials. If there's anything I care about doing something for the environment, it's not being wasteful. [thumbdown]

Holy cow. $6 for a rental? The local store offers a $10 monthly pass that gives you all rentals for 1/2 price. I can walk out with 6 new releases for like $3.50. Every tuesday I rent all the new movies, because there's nothing else to do in BFE.

I can't imagine that they'll make much money off of this. I sure wouldn't get a 2 day rental for $6. [rofl]

I think you underestimate people's laziness in not having to bother to return anything.
