Seriously, how contemporary do they have to be, does that mean still active?

I can't really recommend a group, but I would probably choose one from which I personally don't know that much, like ETA or so. Those who are in the media all the time could be rather boring (but otoh easier to do, esp. when you're already familiar with them).

My 0.5 cents.

Think domestic terrorism, and you'll have a gold mine.

On the left:
E.L.F.
Some factions of P.E.T.A.

On the right:
There's the good ol' KKK (esp. if you allowed to go back into the 60's)

I forget the name of the radical anti-tax folks here in Cali., but when the law tried to deal with them, they would file liens against the police, the D.A., the judges, whatever, then file a Notice of Forgiveness on the lien, and finally report their victim to the IRS for failing to list the Forgiveness as income.

And of course, any street gang, which rules its territory by terrorizing their neighbors.

Teh thing with teh LTTE is that it's probably one of teh largest terrorist organisations evar, with a wealth of information available on teh internets, yet many in teh West aren't very familiar with it. It pioneered teh suicide bomb. Its cause is just, but means are not. Also, in discussing teh SL government's response, you'll get to point out teh morbidly amusing phenomenon of devout, conservative Buddhists baying for blood.

Islamic groups are a dime a dozen, as are commie groups, and most of your classmates are probably going to focus on those.

How often do we have to help you choose a paper topic anyways? Can't you think for yourself yet?

You people are more entertaining. And besides I wouldn't have thought of LTTE.

I'm surprised we haven't gotten a "US GOVERNMENT!" answer yet.

You could do something unexpected and identify some "state terrorism"

N17.

I have a book somewhere which devotes a chapter on how the Greeks finally beat N17. Give me a day to remember where it is, and/or the author and title. ...the author is an American ex-diplomat, now living in Greece. Does anyone know who I'm talking about?

You'll be the only kid in class with a paper on a terrorist group that was defeated.

What was that group that abducted the rich what's her name in the 70s and turned her into a bank robbing she ***** of the ultra left?

Do them. Every detail is known but not by me, and it's still sexy because of the rich chick toting automatic weapons. Also has a nice ending since they pinned it all on the poor revolutionaries and set her free in her parents custody since that was far more restrictive than any prison. She hasn't robbed a bank since.

The KLA were on the US list of terrorist organisations in 1998. In 1999, NATO was their Air Force. They'd be an interesting study.
