I remember in school learning about how Archimedes had used rectangles under a parabola to determine the area under the curve and thinking...that it was integral calculus.

I think of the contrary.
Hadn´t he turned the manuscript into a prayer book,
maybe it hadn´t survived till this day, but instead probably had been burned or gotten lost like so many scientific manuscripts of the classic age.
