Matthew 16:26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. I don't play the lottery, but if I did and won, hummm, what would I do with it all? I hope I would not keep any of it. Or much of it. Or half of it. or most of it? or all of it? Oh God forgive me.

It won't keep me warm unless I burn it.
It won't give me comfort unless I sleep on it as a pillow
It won't protect me unless I hide under it
It won't console me
It won't love me

SO what good is it unless it it to be given away to make others lives better? I pray I am never tempted to find out.

On being asked about doing the lottery (which in the UK is run by a company called Camelot), Bishop Eirenaios said, 'it depends where you place your trust - in God or Camelot'.

Some people here call it voluntary taxation! They (the lottery company and the government) purport to take the gambling stigma out of it by directing the proceeds to the lottery fund which pays for a range of good causes. So, you don't lose (of course you do!) - you just help to finance good causes.

Our state lottery was supposed to fund the educational system. It seems the funds keep getting diverted to "more needy" causes.

Our local tollway when built was $.25 and we were promised it would never go up and only the users would be charged. Well, it has been sold twice and we are now up to $1.50 per tollbridge. And the community now pays a % of their housing costs to support its upkeep.

That last part has nothing to do with lotteries, but I thnk it shows additional corruption going directly into someones bank account.

An old Greek gent I knew well referred to lotteries and Lotto games (which he did buy a ticket in from time to time) as phoro vlakeias (tax on stupidity).

Exactly! Totally true. Just another way for the government to tax us, but this time using our dreams as a means to persuade us to take part in these lotteries.

Don't work, gamble!

OK, if I won the lottery what would I do. Half to the children's ward of the largest cancer hospital in Thessaloniki - the Theagenio- Birth of Theotokos - and the other half to buy an island in the Ionian Sea, where I can watch the sunset................................

As I don't buy lottery tickets I am at a loss to see how I can win.

I win these lotteries all the time. At least that is what the 419 scammers from Africa tell me. But when they try to get me my winnings, that I never knew about, they have a hard time since they need all my personal information, a copy of my passport and several hundred dollars to push the paperwork through.

I thought I won this money, but they want me to pay them to get my winnings.

(please don't warn me about these scams. I know these are scams and would never send them a dime.)

Time-Life does a lot of this too. I regularly get letters telling me I'm in the final whatever of their lottery. I just throw the letters away.

Dear Effie:

Don't feel bad,

I just placed an ad in a local newspaper in order to sell a carpet for 1100.00. I received a call from a lady who said she was hearing impared, she was using one of those TTY services. She asked me to email her all the particulars about the carpet. I did and the next day, I received an email stating she had sent me certified funds to purchase the carpet. She explained that she had sent additional monies to pay for the shipping costs and asked me to deposit the check (It was for 3900.00) then she wanted me to subtract my 1100.00 and wire the rest to someone in England who would arrange to pickup the carpet. The call I received from her was from Florida, the cashiers check was drawn on a bank in Wisconsin, and I was supposed to wire all but 1100.00 to England! I had a funny feeling! When I went to the bank to deposit the check, I asked the bank to call the bank in Wisconsin just to be sure...sure enough, it was a fraudulent check (an excellent forgery!) so we called the police and made a report. By the grace of God, I ended up being a complaintant instead of a victim! Police said it was all generated from Nigeria

Wily as a serpent, gentle as a dove.

The bible says it so plainly, but we keep trusting people and keep being cheated. I say this because yesterday I discovered that the contractor who is building two small flats for us has not been paying for the material he has been buying in my name. In fact, I had a panic attack, I think, yesterday when I found out. I think it was a panic attack because this is the first time this has happened to me. Maybe it was just hysterics - I have read that women my age have them, so why not me!!!!!!!!!!!!

We trusted where we should not have trusted. Get everything, absolutely everything down in writing and then take it to a lawyer to check BEFORE starting anything whatsoever.

Wily as a serpent, gentle as a dove. Although I could not guarantee my actions if he were to suddenly appear in front of my car

You were a lot wilier than we were. You checked with the bank. Good for you!
I need the prayers of all on this matter, because I have made a firm decision that I won't worry about what is going to happen and have left it to God's goodness.

Yes, you have my prayers dear Effie, although my prayers are not worthy. Leave it in the hands of God... try to not loose your peace.

Thanks, Nina. You can also come and visit me in gaol

The truth is that today I am very calm and I believe it is because I have been praying. We are absolutely blameless (if you discount our stupidity in trusting this person) and I believe that the whole thing will work out well.

Maybe I'll even buy a lottery ticket!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again, you have a gentle soul.

As far as I am concerned, the Lottery is just a tax leveled on people who don't know anything about arithmatic!

I tell people:

If you want to double your money, fold it in half and put it back into your pocket!
