![]() Connie K. Ho for redOrbit.com – Your Universe Online 11 times a week. That’s the whopping number of times American lie each week, according to surveys described in WebMD Health News. The statistics relate to a new study by researchers from the University of Notre Dame that focused on if people could be convinced to lie less and the effects of lying. The study, titled “Science of Honesty,” found that those who tell the truth during stressful moments can heighten their mental and physical health. The research was recently presented at the American Psychological Association’s 120th Annual Convention. During the ten week study period, scientists surveyed 100 people, 34% of who were adults and 66% who were college students. The age range was from 18 to 71 years, with an average age of 31. In the project, half the group was told to stop telling major and minor lies while the other half was not given any special instructions on lying. Each week, participants completed measurements on their health and relationship status as well as took a polygraph test to record the number of major and white lies they had told during the week. “Recent evidence indicates that Americans average about 11 lies per week. We wanted to find out if living more honestly can actually cause better health,” explained lead author Anita E. Kelly, professor of psychology at the University of Notre Dame, in a prepared statement. “We found that the participants could purposefully and dramatically reduce their everyday lies, and that in turn was associated with significantly improved health.” At the end of the project, the researchers saw that there was a connection between less lying and improved health for those who were in the no-lie group. In particular, those in the no-lie group who told less than three white lies in the week reported a reduction of about four mental health complaints and three physical health complaints; these complaints were related to mental state, such an anxiety or melancholy, as well as physical feelings, like less sore throats and headaches. On the other hand, when the lying group told less than three white lies, they reported a decrease of only about two fewer mental-health complaints and one less physical complaint. As well, those in the truthful group stated that they felt that they were becoming more honest by the fifth week of the study. If they felt the need to lie, they would try to tell the truth about their daily activities and stop make excuses for not completing a task or arriving late. When all the participants lied less during a week, they reported that they had overall improvements in their mental and physical health. “We found that the participants could purposefully and dramatically reduce their everyday lies, and that in turn was associated with significantly improved health,” continued Kelly, an expert on secrets and self-disclosure, in the statement. The participants’ close personal relationships also became stronger and they stated that they had better social interactions with those around them. “Statistical analyses showed that this improvement in relationships significantly accounted for the improvement in health that was associated with less lying,” noted Lijuan Wang, a statistician at Notre Dame, in the statement. As the results are new, the researchers plan to submit the findings for scientific review and hope for publication later this year. Studies at other research centers have found similar results. One research study at Loyola University in Chicago focused on trust. “When you find that you don’t lie, you have less stress,” Linda Stroh, professor emeritus of organizational behavior at Loyola University in Chicago, tol USA Today. “Being very conflicted adds an inordinate amount of stress to your life.” Another study by a researcher on lying highlighted feelings of intimacy in relationships. “There may be increased conflict, as a result of being open and honest, but it leads to better quality of friendships,” Sally Theran, assistant professor of psychology at Wellesley College, mentioned to WebMD. ![]() http://www.redorbit.com/news/health/...health-080712/ |

Yes a big waste of time and money, I agree Mamboni.
People lie to the point of believing their own lies, they live the lies and NARCISSISTS mingling amongst us in our everyday lives do NOT care if they lie while looking at you with a straight face directly into your eyes. If the system around us is a lie and teaches you to believe its true , well it's still all lies. Trust no one. NO ONE. The lack of empathy has become an epidemic/pandemic . People lie and use you for what they want you for and pretty much see you as worthless and will still lie about it to their death because they're living in a delusional lying world that they the liars have become victims and feed off of anyone in their path to get what they want to fill their needs. Liars feed off of you and if you enable them they will eat you up and spit you out and not give a shit if you care one way or the other....if they did in the first place they wouldn't be lying !! Liars don't have near the sicknesses in their bodies that honest people do because liars don't care. The honest people putting up with the narcissist liars are the ones that suffer and get sick. I talk to sick people everyday, but I ALWAYS get to their soul and ask them what caused this.... what stress were you feeling before you got sick.... They look at me all SHOCKED.....and Everytime, EVERYTIME a stressor caused by a narcissist in their life. A narcissist LIES and is GREAT at being selfish but the sick person just keeps feeding the narcissist because they love their family member or friend that makes them sick !! So lies and liars will kill ya !! Stay away from liars and be healthier and happier !!!!! who needs a big expensive fancy schmancy study to tell us this ? Seek truth and love and youll be able to spot the liars in your life faster before they Make YOU SICK not the other way around ! People can never live in peace when they're being lied to, then the truth teller has to suffer because of the liar's ways. The liars at the top have created liars at the bottom and everywhere in between. Honest people are still here in this world, Thank God, cherish them , savor them because if you are honest with yourself and them, life flows soo much nicer with truth than going against it. Also that article talks about surveys....people LIE in surveys to make themselves look honest. DUh. Rant off. So sorry bout that, but liars make me SICK and we r swimming in them !!!! |

the liars are everywhere and they lie soo good that it's like second nature to them .....and they are NOT as sick (physically no, but mentally YES ! )
as the ones they lie to no matter what these articles say. Are Narcissists Everywhere? In a Word...YES! We live in the "Me Decade" on steroids! Published on March 6, 2012 by Thomas G. Plante, Ph.D., ABPP in Do the Right Thing I well remember a convocation speech when I was in college at Brown University in 1980 stating that while the 1970's was the "Me Decade" the 1980's will become the "We Decade." Yeah, right. If the 1970's were a narcissistic time then it has only gotten so much worse since then. Now we live in the "Me Decade" on steroids! We certainly are living in a more and more narcissistic culture with the battle cry being "it's all about me!" Demanding, entitled, self-centered behavior seems to be more the norm than the exception out there, doesn't it? This is not surprising since we in America (1) live in a more individualistic rather than communal culture and (2) narcissistic behavior is so often not only encouraged but highly reinforced (think about the behavior of so many Hollywood celebrities, politicians, reality TV show stars, professional athletes, high level and well known business executives, and so forth). There are so many examples of narcissistic people getting their way and being reinforced and encouraged for their behavior that this blog post would go on for pages and pages if I listed the examples that I can think of within just a few minutes. The Narcissist Next Door Grandiose and self-important, narcissists are everywhere. There is probably not much that we can do to stop this narcissistic tide in our society. That train has left the station. Maybe the best that we can do is to (1) be mindful of it, (2) provide narcissistic people with corrective feedback when their ego and self-centered nature gets out of hand, and (3) do all that we can to treat other as we wish to be treated. Perhaps the Golden Rule is a very good foil to narcissism. Additionally, engaging in activities that put you in the shoes of others (e.g., volunteerism) helps too. Research from my lab here at Santa Clara University and elswhere has found that volunteer activities such as student immersion trips to work and learn in solidarity among the poor and oppressed increases compassion, lessens narcissistic attitudes, and actually lowers stress. Maybe people doing altruistic behaviors for narcissistic reasons isn't so bad after all. Let them do good for others for selfish reasons if they make the world a better place in the process. So, does a narcissist live next door? Probably ... but there may be one in your own home too! What do you think? Are narcissists everywhere and what can we do about it, if anything? http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/...ere-in-wordyes |

What do you think? Are narcissists everywhere and what can we do about it, if anything? I've noticed of the years how society has denigrated down to a 'look at me' level. American idol, facebook, success is fame, regardless of how you achieve it. Gives me little hope for the future. ![]() |

And the only thing funny about a liar is that they usually don't write their lies down. HAha. This is one of the reasons why I like people with bad memories. They tend not to be liars, or if they are, they are really bad liars, and which makes them easy to spot and avoid. |

Yep! I learned at a very young age that I couldn't lie, because I couldn't remember what I lied about. I don't know how old I was, but it was in grade school, because I have a picture in my head of the playground at school where it happened. Of course, I don't remember the lie, but at least I can remember that I can't lie. I can remember the feeling of shame and embarrassment, which is interesting. I have a soft heart for sweeties. I just want to be around them ALL the time, but instead we all have to live out in the real world amongst ....well.....you know....the non-sweeties. LOL. |

Who didn't know this anyways? All you needed was a dimestore Bible.
There are plently of verses that imply this, like this one: Psalms 39:11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Aside from that just look at the baggage under the eyes, the lines and wear and tear in the faces of any long standing politicians LOL Oh yea and for those thinned skinned sissys here. Just take a look at the face of Pope Rat. Nuff said! |
