I think poor countries are being ungrateful, Germany and France give and have given lots lots of money to the poor EU members France takes great share of that money. Germany is responsible for that we are poor, and did much to make Poland not sure about its motives and goals. I do not apply that to Merkel, I kind of like her and think she's one of few who actually tries to do some things right. When it comes to subsidies of various kind, we're getting only 1/4 of what the older members get. Before and during the entry negotiations, old EU countries acted very egoistically, and now they're getting only a slight taste of the same. Also, rich countries may give money, but profit as well, having big markets open for their products. Opening our young and unprepared markets for EU products resulted in many old companies being closed and giant unemployment. Of course, now we can make up for this by exporting labour, but it has some disadvantages for us (drainage of intellectual power, and lack of money for social insurances), and anyway it's not Germany or France we should be thankful for that, perhaps Britain, Ireland and Sweden. I'm not saying Poland does not profit from EU. It does. But EU membership costs us as well. And it isn't just about money. I'd like to remind You that most parties in Poland support membership of all european countries, and even Turkey, in EU, though it is not financially good for us. |

Im afraid I dont understand why middle and small Euro countries being concerned about the influence of large ones means Poland is still focused on WW2. If someone were to propose a major constitutional change in the US, like say abolition of the electoral college, you can be damned sure the small, middle and large states would be analyzing its effects on their interests, and folks in South Carolina would be looking to see if more power to California would hurt them. It would hardly mean they were refighting the Civil War.

Your original post was saying that the West has basically concluded that WW2 and its aftermath settled the issues between Germany and the rest of Europe. If Poland doesn't consider things settled, and if Poland doesn't want to let by-gones be by-gones, then maybe Germany shouldn't accept that either. In my post I said that it was an understanding between France and Germany that our secular enmity was to be ended. Then Benelux and Italy acknowledge that without Franco-German wars Europe could be initiated. The rest of Europe was not considered at this stage. It becomes clearer that among the 21 who were added later, a significant number think that they can change the ground on which the union was originally build. This is a very good reason to revert to the original six plus Spain. |
