There is a possibility I could be transfered from my beloved Texas to extreme yankee land (New Hampshire). Before I inquire more about the promotion, I am looking for a church home. I found 2 Antiochian parishes but neither have websites. Both of them are actually in Massachuessets (dang yankees can't even have an easily spelled name) which may be up to an hour or more drive from our potential new home (built 1830).
Does anyone know anything of the parishes both named St. George; 1st in Lowell Mass, and the other in Lawrence Mass? I see Greeks all over the place. Oh, I am using an Orthodox Church finder tool. Any idea what "MOS" stands for? (the green one) My priest said they are probably both very ethnic and I should not expect too much english but alot of strong coffee. I hate coffee. I am looking at living north of Manchester NH. Any insights is appreciated. Paul |

A few years ago one of my daughters (a Texan also) moved to Rye N.H. as her husband entered into a medical practice there. Anyway based upon their experience I suggest you evaluate the difference in the cost of living between Houston and N.H., especially property and income taxes. I know Texas has no income tax so the N.H. state tax will be an additional tax. And as a long time (but former) property owner I am aware that you will be paying a much higher tax rate (and have a much higher appraised value) in New Hampshire.
On topic: Depending on how far north you might settle, you might want to consider looking in Canada for a church. If you like I will contact my daughter to see if she has any knowledge of Orthodox churches or I can put you in touch with her. |

Dear Kyrill,
Thank you for the advice. I am now very perplexed as my brother lives in south NH and he says there is no state tax nor income tax. My main office will be in Manchester itself, so I will need to stay within 25 miles or so of this. I have heard the more you move away from Boston the cheaper housing gets. I also notice the smaller housing gets. to the tune of 75% smaller for the same dollar. If it proves to be too expensive for what they are willing to pay me, I will be more than happy to stay in Dixie. Paul |

Your brother is correct there is no state income tax in N.H. I guess I was thinking of the time my daughter was in Mass. before moving up to Rye, N.H. Anyway she says there are two Greek and one Russian Orthodox churches in Manchester. My experience is most (or at least) many of the Orthodox churches back east (Yankee land are fairly ethnic - but that often means good food.)
At least you have choices. Here in rural Mexico I can go 200 kilometers in one direction to a ROCOR monastery or the same distance in another direction to go to an OCA church. It is a treat for me to be in Denver to be able to go to a Greek monastery in the morning and either a Russian or OCA church for weekend services. |

There also appears to be an OCA mission in Manchester, but it is part of the Romanian Episcopate, which if things go the way they want, will soon not be part of the OCA, but will be part of a new Romanian Archdiocese in America. Romanian missions in the OCA tend to be very ethnic as well, but I've heard that their music is great.

Thank you all for your replies. They are very helpful. I had a long talk with my wife and we decided due to her health to pass over the promotion for the time being. If/ when the next one comes around for me, I hope you will all be as generous with your information. ![]() ![]() Porcupine. |
