That's Miles Black yo... otherwise, I think you're right Cem. Couldn't see the bassist well enough... first guess (from Amanda) was Neil Swainson, but I think Neil is a little older than these guys.

Nice playing all around though, that's for sure.

Well, I'm a little behind the curve, but I got everyone but Miles and Brent. I don't really know Miles Black, and I've never seen Brent Gubbels without his hair tied back. So that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Most of the other guys I've know for a long time. I've know Dave Say since 1985. Monster player.

Coincidentally, I'm in New York at the moment for the JVC festival, and this vid is on a par with any of the 'young lions' being touted here, both currently and in the past. Darlene and I were just talking yesterday about the regretable tendency among many Canadians to fail to acknowlege their own, home grown artists. The assumption that all the good stuff is happening somewhere else becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

I'm assuming this is from the Alcan competition. Hard to believe there was once a national competition, with corporate sponsorship and TV coverage and everything, for best Canadian jazz group.

The giveaway for Brent is the long fingers. And there is a way that Miles holds his head that identifies him, hair or not. Vince always dresses sharp. Saul just looks more distinguished nowadays. Stan is Stan. The giveaway for Dave is that it's the same Selmer horn that he's played since high school. Or do just the sax geeks notice that?

This is a great clip. What a happening band that was.
I forgot how red Stan's hair used to be back in those days... he was burning then and still burning now.

By the way, I don't have an exact date for this (will try to get it) but my guess is late eighties in the previous century.
