Default Vancouver Creative Music Institute 2007 Faculty
Coastal Jazz and Blues Society and Vancouver Community College have announced the faculty who will participate in the Vancouver Creative Music Institute, June 16-23, 2007.

The Vancouver Creative Music Institute (VCMI) brings leading international practitioners of creative music together with 30 participants for an intensive 8-day program. It is open to innovative and emerging artists whose musical activities encompass improvisation, new compositional practices and/or the application of new technologies.

VCMI has announced the appointment of clarinetist/composer François Houle as Artistic Director for VCMI 2007. Mr. Houle, a faculty member at Vancouver Community College, explores many facets of modern music from electronic manipulation to acoustic contemporary chamber music. He is joined by artist-in-residence, veteran saxophonist John Butcher along with an array of faculty including drummer Susie Ibarra, trumpeter Cuong Vu, guitarist Eugene Chadbourne, pianist Paul Plimley, bassist Torsten Müller, electronics wiz Giorgio Magnanensi, and percussionist/composer Bernie Arai.

The purpose of the Vancouver Creative Music Institute is to assist emerging and seasoned musicians in developing a personal approach to improvisation and composition, to help define and expand each individual’s musical language and performance parameters, and to broaden interpersonal dynamics through ensemble playing. Participants can expect to grow as musical artists in this supportive and collaborative environment.

The Vancouver Creative Music Institute will take full advantage of the resources offered by Vancouver Community College, located in the heart of Vancouver, including several state-of-the-art rehearsal rooms and equipment. VCMI is an accredited course offered through the Vancouver Community College Music Program. VCMI dovetails with the activities of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (June 22 to July 1, 2007) offering VCMI participants an opportunity to take full advantage of a unique and extraordinary artistic atmosphere.

For information www.coastaljazz.ca The early-bird application deadline for the Vancouver Creative Music Institute is February 15, 2007. Early-bird applicants who are accepted into the program will receive a $50 discount on tuition. Other applications must be received by April 1, 2007.
